I had these ugly stairs in my house. I took the carpet off them. That made them uglier. See?

Here are those stairs after refacing the risers.

And here they are with new treads. And lots of wood filler, plaster, caulk, and paint.

The top three treads were a pain in the ass.

It still needs more caulk and paint.

Is that hardwood flooring or just a tread cover?

3 1/4 inch hardwood planks. I'm going to have to put a runner on it so people in socks don't fall to their deaths.

Just a warning: most hardwood plank flooring isn't designed to be installed below-grade. You'll probably be fine, but it could warp.

Upstairs, I could lay it 'correctly' across the joists, or 'correctly' along the hall. Along the hall meant ripping boards lengthwise, and I didn't have a table saw.
