Baconfish is buying a smartphone. :hist101:

Yeah, so I'm finally buying one and I'm trying to make a choice between an HTC Desire S or Desire Z. Whilst the technical specs of the S are a little better, the Z has a physical keyboard and I can get it on my current tariff which would end up being cheaper for me in the long run.

So yeah, feel free to add some opinions on my options or suggest alternatives. Otherwise just hurl smartphone based abuse at me.
nope.

Things to know:

A. While a physical keyboard is nice, you sacrifice greatly on the battery life because of it.
B. The Desire Z has a much, much slower CPU. It wasn't even a great CPU back when it was released a year ago. This is why it's cheaper.
C. Also the Desire S has a much, much better GPU (~3x faster). I know this probably doesn't matter much to you. :P

Overall, I'd push for the Desire S if for no other reason than it'll probably last you quite a bit longer overall.

Now that we have the comedy option out of the way...

I'm a Droid X owner and always wondered if I was missing out by not having a physical keyboard, but a few weeks ago I was setting up an original Droid for my niece and got to play around with it for a few days. My conclusion was I made the right choice with the Droid X, I disliked using the physical keyboard.

I think you should probably play around with them both for a bit. Generally I think the sliding type keyboard invites a whole host of possible mechanical problems.

Although the keyboard on the Droid3 does look much improved...

i originally wanted a physical keyboard but when it came down to it my cheap ass wasn't going to fork over $70+/mo which limited my options and the best prepaid option had 2 smartphones... one a complete piece of garbage with a keyboard and the other a decent (though nowhere near high end) smartphone without

didn't take long before i stopped caring about not having a keyboard

No, that'd be a Nokia (non-WP7).

I've had a Nokia N97 for almost two years now. It has a really great physical QWERTY keypad that I've had absolutely no problems with.

However, that's about the only feature to this phone that ever worked the way I want it to.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Interesting, I've never heard that before. Why do you think that is? Back-lit keyboards?

No, size constraints. A lot of space that could be used for a battery is taken up by the keyboard and hinge mechanism.

In addition, the Desire Z suffers because it has an older, less efficient CPU as well.

From what I've learned in the last few days looking at smartphones it seems that all of them have pretty ****ty battery life. :P

Going from a featurephone yes, it's much worse. They won't go for 5 days straight.

However, we're talking the difference between making it through the day and not.

There's only a 10% difference in the battery capacity, and seeing how the larger one is more powerful surely it'd have more of a draw anyway? :/
nope.

You'd think so but you'd be wrong. The CPU actually plays a big part in the efficiency, as does the type of screen used. :P

Also, 10% is nothing to laugh at, that could easily be a couple extra hours, which make a big difference on a smartphone.

How many quid is the GS2 going for exactly? Just curious.

On the contract I'm looking at, £200 for the handset and then £16.50/m for 2 years.

Not really that bad considering what you get, it'll go for the se price here in the US. I'd save up for it. Its absolutely worth it.

It appears that I'm going to have to unlock & jailbreak our iPhone 4's so that we can use it them France. How inconvenient. **** you Apple &/or AT&T.

I don't see why I'd want anything that fancy. See: Every other smartphone thread I've ever posted in.

The good thing about smartphones is that it's not like AIDS (unless you're Magic Johnson). You can just get rid of it (often for a price) if it turns out that it sucks. I would honestly suggest that if you're not that sure about whether or not you'll use the features that much, don't get something that's expensive for your first phone. You can always get another one later if you feel like you're missing out on something.
? :)

I have a Desire Z. It's a good phone, but I definitely wouldn't buy it now unless you can find one for dirt cheap. It's pretty dated at this point.
2011-08-21, 3:32 PM #31
The thing with smartphones is that you REALLY don't want to buy an older one. I don't know anything about those phones, but if one is newer by any significant amount, that'd be the one I'd go for.

That being said, if the Incredible 2 is an option, I'd strongly consider going with that. It is, accurately enough, an incredible phone. I have the original HTC Incredible and I love it. The 2 is all the best parts kept, and all the not-as-awesome parts improved. Very very solid phone, if that's an option.

I ended up buying a Desire S about 30 minutes ago. Although looking at that compared to the Incredible S they're actually very similar. The only real differences seem to be the camera and larger screen on the Incredible.

Oh, and £100. :P
nope.
