... that the save icon in Word is still a floppy disk.

(Post other things you've just noticed.)

It's like that in loads of things, See if you can think of a better image that's universally seen as "save to disk".

It's like that because when people see it, they don't think "floppy," but rather, "save".

If you Google it, you'll find that there are long discussions on it every couple of years on tech sites, blogs, coding communities, design/UX communities, etc. And it's always the same discussion of familiarity vs. technical accuracy. I think it's a cool example of when technical accuracy is a less optimal design choice than familiarity when making a meaning obvious (especially because its technical accuracy was what associated it with that meaning in the first place).

I wonder how long the floppy will be the recognizable symbol for saving. 10 years more?

It's strangely iconic. Unlike USB drives, flash drives and hard drives that have all different external shapes and forms. I want it to last until I have kids so when my kids ask me what a floppy disk is, I can respond along the lines of "pieces of infuriating s***..."

I got the "C for Dummies" book in 2005, and in the opening chapters where it described how directories are named it said that B:\ was omitted "for historical reasons".

I miss 5 inch floppies :(

Microphone symbols still look like old 50's era newsmics, and the universal symbol of a phone is still a rotary landline with a huge receiver.

-Technology is weird, but how we look at it is weirder, I suspect.

In a lot of places (including this site) has an oldskool looking film strip as a video icon.
You can't judge a book by it's file size

Yeah, I've always thought that in time the icons might stay the same and people will know them as "the save icon" or "the telephone icon" rather than "a floppy disk" or "the handle you could hit hard against the phone for dramatic effect".

Same here. The thing is that I already moved their contents to a CD-R in 2003 so they're just there "just in case". Well then.
