"Found Footage" movies

So I'm tempted to go see Apollo 18, even though I thought the previews looked terrible. I didn't realize this was a found footage movie when I saw the trailers, I just thought it was some marketing gimmick.

I've always been a sucker for found-footage movies, starting with The Blair Witch project and continuing with Paranormal Activity. I really enjoyed both of those movies and have always been facinated by the way they can make a really entertaining movie with almost no budget at all. What are your thoughts on found-footage movies? Are they going to continue to be entertaining and successful? Do they suck and no one should ever pay to see one?

Also, here's a fairly positive review of Apollo 18 for anyone who was thinking about seeing it but wasn't sure because of all the negative press.

I saw Cannibal Holocaust at a theater, an impulse viewing because I wanted to see why it was so infamous.

Not sure if you would be interested in that. It does feature animals being cut up and gutted on screen, for example.

But the soundtrack sucked. I remember like two tracks played over and over.

I also enjoyed "The Blair Witch Project" & "Paranormal Activity". They certainly aren't my favorite movies but they were decent enough. I'm sure that I'll eventually watch "Apollo 18" as well.

apollo 18 sounds like it sucks on rotten tomatoes

Love 'em. I think it's a great concept. Would like to see movies that ditch the 'found footage' part and just tell their stories from the first person. Would be awesome.

I'd recommend checking out the REC/Quarantine films, they're great. Can't really think of many that are good. The Last Exorcism was decent, excluding the incredibly stupid ending.

My two favorites are Cloverfield and Quarantine. Both are quality movies.

From what I understand, the "monster" in Apollo 18 really, really, sucks.

I just wanted to share something real quick, but I didn't want to start a new topic just for this. I figured this might be right up some massassians' alley.

We're trying to get some more involvement on our facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?filter=lf#!/pages/Completely-Overrated/159732330769611
by asking people to celebrate nerddom by posting a picture of themselves doing something nerdy on our wall, or sharing something nerdy that they love. It would be great to see what some of you guys can come up with.

After reading one review of the movie and having the "twist" ruined for me, it was pretty much decided that I wouldn't go see it (not to mention the low approval rating on rottentomatoes).

Everything looks like it sucks on that site. They're the worst movie review site on the internet. Bunch of wannabe movie snobs.

i guess maybe you could say that about the user reviews? But the critic reviews are drawn from mostly legit print and web publications.

although, to be fair, it got an average of 3.6/10 from critics and 3.2/5 from the audience on RT.
