What's your favorite healthy snack?
2011-09-09, 2:36 PM #1
I had the munchies for some hot pockets or shin ramyun then realized that I don't have any go-to snacks that are remotely healthy. Anyone have a particular healthy(-ish) snack that's a regular fave?

I eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. Call me crazy, but that sort of thing is pretty much my favorite type of food.

Of course I balance out all of the good food I eat with plenty of terrible food and lots of alcohol and cigarettes.

Yeah I also consume a ridiculous amount of water.

Ditto.

As for snacks... taro mochi, carrots, grapes / raisins, bananas / banana chips, apples, unsalted pistachios and pecans, assorted dehydrated fruits...

Sometimes I'll slice up an apple, wash a handful of grapes and cut carrots, toss it all into a bowl, and call it a meal. :P

water is not food so... WATER IS NOT A SNACK

I honestly think I drink too much water. Usually about 8 liters a day.

I love almonds, apples, carrots, and crunchy peanut butter. These things are on specifically on my do-not-eat list now that I have braces :( Now my favorite snack would have to be water as well!

..the heck? I drank 8 cups of water the other day (something I never, ever approach), and I must have urinated at least 15 times.

Anyway, my favorite 'healthy' snack would have to be raspberries. If they aren't healthy enough, I like cauliflower well enough to just much on it raw.

I tend to eat a ton of fruits & vegetables as part of my "meals" so I won't include those as "snacks".
  • Dates
  • Figs
  • Nuts (raw, shelled & unsalted)
Speaking of dates, if you've never had them stuffed with goat cheese, you're really missing out on something special.

If you're an active person, you'll be able to consume more water. However, even hiking a rough trail for 8 hours in the scorching sun (95 F) & horrendous humidity (85%+), a 3-liter CamelPack will typically suffice (for me). My guess is that Anthony is extremely active or he's merely drinking too much water, as he stated.

Correct me if I am wrong but you had an alcohol problem not too long ago? This would be common for a recovering alcoholic, no worries.

Mine is yogurt. Yogurt, yogurt, yogurt, and yogurt. I can stock an entire fridge full of it and be out in 2 weeks.

Free is one of the more active people I know, and I marvel at his ability to operate on minimal hydration (outside what his food automatically contains). Seriously, the guy doesn't really drink much of anything. :-/

I still drink, sometimes to excessive degrees, but nothing like it used to be. I'm also a pretty active person. So yeah, I tend to consume a lot of water to stay hydrated. Basically if my urine isn't clear, I just keep drinking water until it is.

Grapes.
nope.

... Probably bread. Healthiest thing I'll eat on a whim.

At least, when parents insist on buying chocolate and crisps. I wouldn't if I was living alone. I'd probably not eat nearly as much.

This. Unless its wholegrain its not exactly healthy.. and even then still.

... I did qualify it as the healthiest thing I eat. That should put into perspective the rest of my diet abysmal as it is.

I usually eat terribly, but I so enjoy some healthy snacks. Carrots (raw and crispy) grapes, apples. Strawberries with Nutella on them is quite delicious as well, though maybe not as healthy as the other options I listed.

Celery is probably the healthiest of the snacks that I partake in. The salsa I make at home probably is pretty healthy too.

It doesn't matter how whole the grain is. If there's *any* grain, it's not good for you.

Also, my Scott Pilgrim reference was completely lost. :(

I totally need to read the series and/or watch the movie!

The "negative" effects of eating bread are negligible in moderation. "Healthy" is a relative term. For instance, a multitude of elite athletes from around the planet, consume large quantities of bread & pasta. Michael Phelps, despite Marfan Syndrome, would be a good example of someone that eats more "junk" food on a daily basis than I consume in a month, yet few would say that I'm "healthier".

This is true. Health is usually in terms of moderation and balance. Even too many vitamins and minerals (like what you might find in a megavitamin that gives you 100 times the daily value) can be bad for you. And red meat in moderation is good for you, or at least okay.

I had a coach once who made a good point: if you were starving in a desert and came across a candy bar, it would still provide enough to keep you alive a little longer. There's no such thing as bad food, per se.

The only reason for you to not have a carbohydrate intake is if you're bedridden, or you perambulate via powerchair (sorry mb)
