SSD question
2011-09-15, 4:01 PM #1
I've been interested in getting an SSD for a while as an OS drive (I currently have a 640GB OS drive and a 2TB second drive. I'm planning on running 3 drives and having the SSD be the OS drive.) I'm looking for a ~120-128GB drive.

I have a SATAII (3Gbps) motherboard (DFI LanParty Jr. X58). I'm considering this drive:

(Crucial M4, 128GB)
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=365475&CatId=5300

This drive is a SATAIII (6Gbps) drive.

There is also this drive:
(OCZ Vertex Plus)
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1068616&?a=1&SRCCODE=LINKSHARE&cm_mmc_o=-ddCjC1bELltzywCjC-d2CjCdwwp&AffiliateID=rGMTN56tf_w-vvS8rrVvItoP_E_ylqoRDQ

It's significantly cheaper, because it's a couple years old. It's a SATAII drive.

Since my mobo doesn't have a SATAIII controller, is there any benefit I would get from getting a new/current generation SATAIII drive? Or would my perceivable performance with a SATAII time be the same (i.e. more worth it for me to buy an older drive)?

Are there any other benefits to newer drives?

"Solid-state drives have already saturated SATA 3 Gbit/s with 285/275 MB/s max read/write speed and 250 MB/s sustained..."

After looking at the specs of both drives, my guess would be the Crucial M4 will perform slightly better although I don't know if it would be significant or noticeable. The Vertez Plus has a max read speed of 250 MB/s, not sustained. It can't quite saturate it's Sata connection. The Crucial M4 should saturate it's Sata connection (atleast during Read operations) most of the time. Unless your looking to save money, I would get the SataIII SSD and transfer it to your future computer. You also have the option of installing a PCI-E SataIII controller card to get full speed, although configuring it to use the controller and be your boot drive might be a pain.

Hmm thanks.

Here's another option (A more current OCZ drive ... although I've heard they've been having issues?)

If it's OCZ make sure it's a Vertex series.
