New Facebook
2011-09-21, 10:13 PM #1
Does anyone else find this to be the biggest crock of **** yet? I know most of you will vehemently defend it, because that's the way this community is, but this new layout is absolutely horrid.

Why do I need to give a **** about what Facebook deems as "top statuses" and why have my real time statuses been cast to the wind? Even the ones that are supposed to be arranged chronologically are not entirely. Absolute idiocy. I can officially say I hope Facebook tanks, and hard. That'll teach them to continuously degrade a perfectly good working program time and time again.

Also -- in before the "change is bad" derps; this is a lot more then just a screwy chat, this is a seriously negative and cumbersome change that should have never taken place. If it ain't broke, don't break it.

i agree on this. change is often good and has to happen to move forward, but specifically the whole "top status" crap is annoying as hell!!! if they wanted to make that an OPTION then by all means! in fact that would be an improvement... but when you make it the default... and then make it revert back again as the default after its already been changed once... that is just stupid. i really dont want facebook to start sucking, because i really dont want to bother with starting/learning a new social "stay connected" site.

Facebook sucks. It has sucked for a long time. This only makes it suck even more.

I don't get what everyone is *****ing about. Nothing much has changed.... except maybe some of how it looks.... and that weird blue tab.....
I can't wait for the day schools get the money they need, and the military has to hold bake sales to afford bombs.

People love to whine about small changes to things they use. Be careful, though... if you defend the change the xnumbers will just say it's because you don't like him because he said something idiotic in another thread.

My best friend finally joined Google+, resulting in the removal of the last major obstacle I had towards leaving Facebook entirely. This UI change alone isn't why I'm switching, it's just I can't stand how Facebook has worked for a long time now. Literally the only thing it has ever had going for it was the fact that everyone and their mother is on it. Period. That's all the nice things I can say about it.
2011-09-21, 10:49 PM #7
I use mobile almost exclusively...it hasn't changed much.

But this happens every year..change. ***** moan. Get used to it. Repeat year later. And we still all use it.

I attempted to deactivate my Facebook recently. I got an email from them a few days later saying "thank you for reactivating your account." Apparently it's impossible to deactivate the damned thing.

I've been on google+ for a while now, it's only real drawback so far is it's been pretty quiet. But as facebook keeps changing more and more people go to google+, so I'm happy.
It does seem ironic though, that people are changing to it because they hate change (though as x25064 said, it's not simply about hating change).

Ever since I linked Facebook to my Digsby account I don't go to facebook.com.

I have been using Facebook since when Myspace was cool and you needed an limited list of.edu addresses to get on.

I instantly dropped Myspace. None of my friends were on,.just people I met recently at university.

It was better.

Right now..it still is.

The problem was Myspace always sucked. people have too much time invested in Fb. unLess they really screw things up, there isn't much inventive to switch. Especially if your a photo whore.
2011-09-22, 12:56 AM #13
I dunno, people had a great amount of time invested in Myspace before FB became king.

You'd be wrong. Also the changes are far from 'small'.

The guy in the article makes this sound incredibly hype..

i don't even use the facebook website... i went to look at it and i am not a fan of having top stories on the page above recent... i only care about recent... i'm sure the majority of facebook users only care about recent

between tweetdeck on my pc and the launcherpro friends widget i don't actually need to visit the facebook site unless i get a friend request or something

if you hope it tanks you better not still be using it right now xnumbers, otherwise shut up about it.

Twitter is the only fan-fangled socialist media outlet that I use (even though if I really wanted to make a (lame) point I'd probably use what was popular 10 years ago - e.g. LiveJournal) and the backlash it gets everytime some things change is just ridiculous for most parts. Or the backlash it gets to begin with.

I'm guessing what I'm trying to say is "Ha! I remember when it was TheFaceBook and I didn't even use it then! Neener-weener!"

I get the feeling that some people are just making "lol whiner" posts without actually reading the thread, or even all of the first post.

This is really the worst revision they've come out with, and it's clearly a reaction to Google+ being better in every facet. And it doesn't happen yearly. It happens about every other month these days.

I did and I don't disagree that some of the design changes are bad. The additional sidebar is dumb and I don't like it. When it comes to WHY that exists Facebook wanted to try out different ways of displaying content and I don't see what's so wrong about that.

Most people complaining don't understand what goes into UX and thus can't describe their issues with it. I'm not saying you have to know what youre talking about, but I really don't care how you use facebook. Yes you don't like it, but is that really a good reason to hope a company tanks and people get put out of jobs?

The new ticker on the side is the only thing I have somewhat of an issue with, but Adblock fixed that quick.

That said, those problems have actually managed to keep my Facebook friends list extremely small and tidy. I basically only go to the website when their app and APIs start failing miserably (which sadly seems to be on the order of a weekly occurrence at this point).

I said exactly what is wrong with it, descriptively too. Go re-read the OP.

I don't get the complaints... it's not even that different. I did like how all my 'top stories' on the day it came out were people complaining about the 'top stories' thing.

Cut your post down to your 'descriptive' complaints.

1 - Opinion.
2 - Because facebook is trying to advance social media and is trying something new.
3 - Opinion.

Okay so after taking out the extra content from your post, it still only had one decent point.

It's wrong to hope a company tanks and people get put out of jobs when the company and its employees have a consistent history of following poor engineering practices?

I'm pretty sure the reason they switched to 'top stories' is because inner joins cost too much.
2011-09-22, 11:08 AM #33
I usually don't mind the changes, but taking away the top stories option and making it mandatory is silly and the ticker is pointless.
nope.
2011-09-22, 11:17 AM #34
Well, this change was the last stray for me, deleted everything I could (which isn't a lot) and deactivated.

It wasn't just the layout it's everything that has happened leading up to it and how every month or so I had to tweak my privacy settings because they had made it do something I didn't want it to. For instance I don't post any pictures of myself or friends unless it's in a place only we can see it, then Facebook adds auto tags and all of a sudden every picture which I'm in and was added by people I don't even know is tagged, so much for privacy.
I've also had friends where Facebook has extracted contacts from their phones without their permission.

It was a handy way of contacting friends but the benefits for me are now too small compared to the hassle.
2011-09-22, 11:42 AM #35
The recent changes did encourage me to finally sign up for Google+, and I was actually surprised how many of my friends were already using it (though most of them are coworkers so it's not terribly surprising). I do like the Google+ layout far more than the current Facebook one. However, just like when I transitioned from Myspace, I won't likely drop it anytime soon.

EDIT: I also don't like being forced on top stories because I would miss status updates I actually cared about that the "top stories" didn't deem worthy of including.
