...except that it's all I've got. Really wish I'd packed some DVDs.

I should explain here that I'm staying in halls in one of the top universities in the world, and was told to bring an ethernet cable as they don't have wifi. I did not expect this.

Wow, a globally successful college, and no wi fi?

They're as out of the loop as I am.

Such fantastic transfer rates.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

Wow, that sucks. Even when I started college 7 years ago, we had about 50 Mbps both ways, although no wifi in the dorms until my sophomore year.

Illegal activity!
2011-09-26, 5:18 PM #6
Actually, that's legal.
nope.

I'm guessing that bringing your own WiFi router is prohibited? (Not that it would help with those transfer speeds, just for convenience.)

my phone rarely even gets such crappy speeds

which brings me to a thought... what kind of cell phone plan do you have and can you tether?
eat right, exercise, die anyway

Well, she's in the UK, so she's paying about $800 a month for 20 minutes of analog-only CDMA.

Woah. When I was at uni, there wasn't wifi (every room had a cable port) but the down speeds were in the order of 10s of MB per second. In 2001.
2011-09-27, 2:58 AM #11
I had that so long as I was using the internet at 2am. :P
nope.

If I had 10MBps at Uni, I'd have exceeded my daily limit in ten seconds.

Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

In 2001, I had only been using the Net for about a year and was still ignorant of things like transfer rates and download speeds.

Well, as I keep pointing out to people today, I had better speeds than this in 1995. Even email is almost too much hassle.

As for the video - yes it's legal (Long Live the BBC!). Unfortunately the download got to about a third of the way (after an hour or two) and then stopped itself. I could not face starting it again.

I could probably get better speeds with my phone plan, but it's not really worth it. I'm only here one more night. Apart from the abysmal internet though, it's absolutely lovely. If anyone gets a chance to go to an academic event at Oxford, jump at it (I'm sure the same goes for Cambridge too, but I've not been there)

Ah, Oxford. That explains it. Very traditional.

I would only do so if the even was brief, a couple of days at most... I am WAY too dependant on the internet, definitely addicted and have no intention to change >_>

I am addicted to the Internet in the sense that, when it's around, I find it very difficult to tear myself away from it, but when I don't have it, I get along fine without it.

Haha, don't let CM hear you say that. :P

But yeah, I'm with you. I just need a bigger external. I still like having the net for various reasons though. How else could I post snarky stuff here in the Discussion Forum? :D

I second that! I loved my time in Oxford, but the college I was staying at had much better internet. Then again I stayed there in my pre-downloading days, so I can't say much for that. I do remember the lack of WiFi vividly though.

Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.
