No, but no one will care. Developers won't even care if you download their games that are long gone from stores as it is. Well, most don't, and if they do, they're idiots.

I don't think Prince of Persia was ever technically made freeware, but it's not like Jordan Mechnar really cares if you go download his work from 1990.

...Emon does have a point. Theres also a matter of the plethora of titles from software companies long defunct...

It's mind-boggling to think that probably in as little as 15 years, most of the current titles could possibly be freeware or somesuch.. The games 15 years in the future will be so good, today's games will look like manure in comparison.

It's just.. insane! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/eek.gif]

Freelancer, I doubt that. I play my NES on a regular basis, and althogh the games are 15+ years old they don't look like manure in comparison.

Look at Super Mario Brothers or the original Zelda. Sure, the graphics are dated, but I only recently played through them and I found them as entertianing as most any new games I have played.

Good games are good games, and if they are that fun, they will continue to be fun. Look at Star Wars, the technology has progress leaps and bounds since 1977, but very few will call the prequels better than the originals.

It's true that on the basis of story telling, dialogue and having a justified existence whatsoever the original films are generally considered better. But the special effects in the prequels are obviously more advanced. Not that they're necessarily more entertaining as they fit in with the movie, but they are more technologically advanced.

I think that's what he meant by future games making old games look bad. As far as graphics are concerned they likely will be better, but as far as gameplay... who knows?

It really depends. Many companies still keep the rights to old titles that they know they're never going to develop again, claiming however that they will be doing something.

Intellectual and other rights can often exist long after the copyright holder's death.

I had an article on it all once - if I find it and have the time I might type it up here... though wouldn't that be a copyright infringement?

To be honest it's a minefield. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Actually, according to copyright laws, the copyright expires 25 years after the game is released, unless the developer renews the copyright for another 25 years.

Yah but games like JK could still make money in 25 years.

/me thinks of an old GBK still editting in his rocking chair...

Hmm... it'd be nice to be able to pick up the 12 to 15-year old games, like Alien Breed, for low, low prices!

EDIT: Woo. Post # 1000. Go me.

Yeah, but you know what? This one, this one right here, this was my dream, my wish, and it didn't come true. So I'm takin' it back. I'm takin' 'em all back.

All copyrights expire. It just depends on if the money is spent to renew the copyright.

So does this mean that in 2023, we can legally edit Infernal Machine? Bah, that's what killed that game I think. You could edit most all of it with JK's tools.

The way computer technology is going, games will in 15 years really be a lot more advanced. Cars haven't advanced at such speed, so cars still don't fly, even though people in the fifties thought they would do that and a lot more. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Touché... he has a point, though. Compare the graphics of today's games against that of ones made 15 years ago.... infact, what games were made 15 years ago?

Did you know that at the start of the 19th century, people said that everything that could be invented had already been so. Changes could occur in gaming technology, that would make today's games look like manure.

(PS. OMG! I REVIVED A THREAD FROM LAST YEAR!!!)

If a game is well designed, it won't hurt to look at. Prince of Persia is about fourteen years old, but it was well designed, and easy on the eyes. Not like some other games that are just so low res they look so hideous and are an eye sore.

Think about the status of cars 100 years ago now look at them. I would say that the 20th century brought the most advancements to humans than any of the other centuries combined.

BTW Flying cars arent the thing of the future...HOVERCRAFT!
