I wish to purchase an ipod dock
2011-10-27, 4:58 PM #1
I want to replace my CD player with one of those ipod docks that has speakers on it, can anyone suggest a good model or brand? I don't need a $1000 sound system thing with the best audio quality, but I am a musician and often learn tunes by listening to them so it's crucial that I can actually hear all the instruments (i.e. bass) and can turn the volume up quite loud.

I suggest just walking into a store and getting anything by a brand that isnt obviously a knockoff (Sporny!) or a straight Apple one.

I have an an Altec Lansing 'iMotion' deal... have for years. It's very good in the sound quality/bass/volume department. However, the 'dock' portion is a slot that opens to receive an ipod and then is pushed closed. I think the connection there is a little flimsy, because after a while using it (2 years?) it starts to cut out the right channel, and you have to jiggle it to get both back. The speakers themselves haven't failed or anything though.

I guess what I'm saying is: maybe check out Altec Lansing models without an 'opening and closing' type dock. This thing gets really REALLY loud if you want it to.

I just use a standard stereo receiver, a couple of bookshelf speakers, and a RCA to 3.5mm headphone jack cable from Radio Shack. The whole setup cost around $200 and it kicks the **** out of any all-in-one dock system I've seen, and my family has a couple of them. Only drawback is it's quite a bit bigger. It does however serve many other purposes.

Well then perhaps a music stereo purchase is in order.

I have an InMotion.

My only gripe is you need usb wall plug because it uses the ipod's power cable to charge, which is dumb. Makes a lotta noise though :D
