Why would you want to see the first 5 pages or the last page?

How about the first page or the last 4? That would be SOOO much more convenient.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

The only threads we have above 5 pages are the ones that have been that way for months or years.

exactly, which is why no one is gonna want to look at the first 5 pages.. But you might want to look at the 2nd to last page in case a new page just started and there's posts on the previous page that you missed.

That's why you use the "view first unread" option. Then it doesn't matter where you stopped.
