Seriously? There are massassians/nerds who don't know about plinkett/red letter media yet?

You're missing out...

http://redlettermedia.com/

Check out the Star Wars reviews... well worth the watch.
2011-12-22, 6:41 PM #8
Note: They are atleast as long as the movies they review, and worth so, so much more.
2011-12-22, 6:44 PM #9
I remember when I first brought redlettermedia to massassi's attention most posters were skeptical and annoyed, I'm glad you've all seen the errors of your ways and realized he is god.

His reviews of the Star Wars prequels are pretty funny, but he gets old really fast. After a while he just comes off like an ******* who likes to nit pick movies. When he reviews movies that are pretty roundly admired, yet still picks them apart, he loses me.

Like what? Avatar? Psh.

He reviewed Star Trek and admitted many times he really liked it, and just pointed out things he noticed about it such as how demographics were approached. He is a very good critic but people don't take him seriously enough because he is also a good comedian
2011-12-22, 8:08 PM #12
In so many words, I don't care for him because he's essentially a hater. Also, I can't claim to be a big fan of the originality of his review concept, because he's essentially doing a really slow movie version of what Ben Croshaw does really fast with videogames and Zero Punctuation. And similar to how "Yahtzee" is usually pretty funny, he's ultimately a nit picker and a horrible game critic.

What's the point to listening to "critics" if they don't nitpick or have some sort of gimick.

I kinda agree with you there, Echoman, so long as the critic is commenting on something you're not necessarily trying to gain some objective information about. If you've seen the Star Wars prequels and wanna listen to some dude ramble about 'em, then he better be slammin' them or have some humor involved. But if you're trying to figure out whether, like, "J. Edgar" is good enough to go see, you're not gonna start with someone like this, probably.

Zero Punctuation episodes are not critical reviews. Yahtzee's persona while narrating the episodes is not that of a critic. The show is purely for comedic value. They are parody. Calling them reviews is like saying Charlie Sheen's Roast would be the same as if he appeared on Inside the Actors Studio. No **** Yahtzee is nit picking - that's the entire point of the ****ing show!

Does someone have to write "comedy" on a brick and smash you in the face with it for you to know when someone is taking the piss?

Popular movies aren't immune to criticism. Even admired movies have plot holes, inconsistencies and errors. Plinkett dissects films with a level of exactness not often shown in film review, and shows he has a great amount of insight into storytelling and the structure of film. How you respond to his humour is really just preference - I don't find him that funny - but dismissing him as a "hater" really throws **** in the face of all critical review.
2011-12-23, 10:19 AM #16
I've actually learned a lot about story telling and how to properly structure a story for the common masses from Plinkett. Even when he's picking apart a movie he likes, I enjoy watching his reviews because he talks about stuff I never considered before- it gives me a lot more to think about when I watch movies, which I enjoy.

Because of his Star Trek review, I've decided that Star Trek was a good movie, it just wasn't a good Star Trek movie. Which I'm ok with...

Gee it's really weird how in his column where he writes about things in a serious tone he backs up all of his points that he makes during the ZP reviews, just without the humorous angle. No **** it's comedy. Remember that part where I said he's usually pretty funny? Furthermore, yes, he's still a game critic, even though his reviews have a comedic angle. He is a good comedian, but a horrible critic. You are a fanboy.

Additionally, I never said that a movie was immune to criticism because it is popular. I said it makes you seem like a hater when you rag on something as terrible when the vast majority of other critics hail it as fantastic. And I know he dissects movies to a higher degree than most reviewers. That's why I said he's a nit picker. And dismissing him as a hater doesn't throw **** in the face of all critical review. There are plenty of critics who are haters and fanboys. This isn't a secret. Look at Armond White ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armond_White ) for a perfect example of a critic who seems to intentionally go against the grain. I'm saying "Plinkett" is a douchebag who likes to nit pick movies because he knows there are a bunch of other people out there who like to hate on them. It's not my fault he's a bitter failed filmmaker who thinks he's better than George Lucas out of some misguided sense of self righteousness given to him by the ability to look at what Lucas did with the prequels and then whine about how he could have done it better, painting his examples of how to improve the movies with incredibly broad strokes.

He's not a critic, he's an ******* who desperately wants validation that his ideas about filmmaking are actually good. He's just a troll. Nothing more.

Because I understand ZP to be comedy and don't complain like a little ***** that every video is filled with negative criticism? Give me a ****ing break. I've never read Yahtzee's print work and I don't care to - my point is that you compared ZP to Plinkett's videos, which is a slanted comparison, and also referred to ZP as video game review when it isn't. Stephen Colbert isn't really a hardline Republican and the Colbert Report isn't a legitimate news program. There's this thing called caricature that you seem to be missing.

Furthermore, Plinkett's repertoire of film review is a collection of critically panned movies. Plinkett is not going against any grains here. And he makes a damned good effort to analyse why they aren't good movies, rather than just how they aren't good movies. He is a critic. Deal with it.

I bet my virginity that Antony watches and reviews the crystal skull review just because he is a bitter douchebag who failed as a movie critic and now wants to force his opinions on what makes a good movie critic and wants validation that his ideas about review making are good. Nothing more.

Why would I watch a overly critical review of a movie I already don't care for? Do you think I'm desperate to have my opinions reinforced?

You are still an idiot. Red Letter Media reviews still suck.

Jin,

Zero Punctuation is The Escapist's groundbreaking video review series starring Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw.

Hey that's straight from the Zero Punctuation Page on The Escapist's website.

Quote:
Zero Punctuation is an ongoing video game review series created by comedy writer and video game journalist Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw and published by the online magazine The Escapist.

Quote:
Croshaw, more often than not, provides highly critical reviews of games, usually pointing out the faults that he implies other professional reviewers ignore in high-profile releases.

Hey those are from the ZP wikipedia page.

Just because it's comedy doesn't mean it ceases to be a review. He has pointed out many times that even though his reviews are funny, they're his legitimate views on games. ZP is an ongoing video review series.

Also, while Stephen Colbert isn't actually a hardline republican, he gets messages across using things called irony and parody. This is completely different because he is deliberately creating a facade for the viewing public, while Yahtzee has repeatedly pointed out that the views he expresses in his ZP reviews are his actual feelings about games.

I'm not sure why the two of you are having such a hard time understanding this. I don't like Red Letter Media reviews because they're 1. not funny, and 2. nit picking. I find Zero Punctuation to be hilarious, but contend that Yahtzee is ultimately a terrible game critic because all he does is nit pick.

He's also pointed out in the actual videos themselves that they intentionally focus on only negative hyperbole for comedy and aren't to be taken seriously. The content may be based off some legitimate opinions but it's intentionally blown up to extremes for the sake of parody. They're only reviews in the sense that they're an evaluation of the subject - in the same way that me saying Antony is an upset toddler is an evaluation of you. Can you see the distinction I'm trying to illustrate here?

From what I can tell Yahtzee's print work is merely opinionated commentary on video gaming and hardly anything resembling critical review. He's a humourist writing humour. I don't know why anyone would take him seriously. Plinkett, on the other hand, combines bad comedy with critical review. Drawing a distinction between critical review and 'nit picking' based on how major or minor the points of argument are goes in the face of critical review because all aspects of the subject should be considered in the process.

I even just handed you an argument for ZP being considered critical review. Have at it.
2011-12-23, 12:54 PM #23
Yahtzee has, on occasion, praised videogames quite a bit. It's rare, but he does do it.

Also, there's a big difference between a review of a movie and a hour long diatribe about how you think it should have been.
>>untie shoes
2011-12-23, 1:42 PM #24
His opinions about how it should have been contribute maybe ten minutes of the running time. The distinction of a Plinkett review to any regular movie review is that his is a critical dissection of the film. It covers detail that couldn't be fully explored in five to seven minutes. Even removing his attempts at comedy and speeding up the comatose pacing there is still a good 30 minutes of worthwhile content. Yeah, the videos are longer than they should be - but it's not all drivel.

I don't know how much of this is sarcasm or not, but I'll bite.

I am a huge fan of movies of all sorts. I more or less refuse to hate any movie. There is something you can take away positively from every movie ever made. There will be at least one good performance, a scene that really works, an awesome line, or even just a cool shot. There are plenty of movies I like (some that I even own) based on single shots, edits, characters, etc... that are on screen for only a minute or two. Sure, a lot of those films are objectively bad, but there are great things to find in every movie ever made. I have never seen a movie that didn't have at least one part that I liked. And yes, I'm saying that I will sit through a movie that I otherwise don't really like at all, just for a single 2 minute scene, or a line or two.

Years ago, I loved to nit pick movies apart until I hated them. Hell, I even remember when Timewolf and I hated each other because I had convinced myself that the Lord of the Rings movies were terrible. I used to dump on the Star Wars prequels and all other sorts of roundly hated movies all the time, but I guess I'm just to the point in my life where there are so many things in the world that I despise, I can't allow myself to bring that negativity into one of the few things I truly enjoy. So I don't dump on movies anymore, and it annoys me when people who claim to be lovers of film do. Take it from Quentin Tarantino, who once said "never, under any circumstances, hate a movie" for the same reasons I've just gone over.

And no, I do not have any illusions about working in the film industry. I studied film in college, but I never even attempted to get into the industry, because working on my own projects and having to go through bit by bit and analyze the hell out of everything I was doing caused me to do the same thing when I watched movies, which is what turned me into the kind of guy who would have applauded Plinkett for what he does. I also realize that taking something you love to do, and turning it into work is one of the easiest ways to learn that you hate doing that thing. Working on my own projects and analyzing the hell out of movies caused me to hate them, and I never had any positive views toward a movie unless it embraced the same kind of cynical ideas I had toward the world.

I don't want to try to break into the film industry for the same reason I don't go enroll at Notre Dame and try out for the football team. I love movies, and I love football, but I can't ever see myself doing either of those things for a living.
