GAME OF THE YEAR 2011

Chooose.

For me, Saints Row the third, no question, hands down, followed closely by deus ex and then third is BF3

I thought skyrim and portal 2 were mediocre. :/

I'd rather have one big city that is detailed with great combat and fun gameplay than 10 bland pseudo-open cities, fetch quests and promises.

Other: L.A. Noire. I didn't play nearly every big title this year, but of those I did play, this was the most enjoyable.

Saints Row The Third, because I enjoy balls out insanity.

People say that game is self aware. I disagree. Self aware implies that Saints Row is in on the joke. It doesn't treat it like a joke. That's just how things are in Steelport. None of it is played as odd at all. There are occasional "holy **** this is ridiculous" type quips, but only when things get really out of hand.

Personally, the traffic habits of the Steelport citizens are my favorite bit. I love that I'm not the only person who drives like a madman. It's nothing unusual at all to see other drivers running people over, crashing their cars until they explode, stealing other people's cars, or even getting out and fighting the police (who always end up murdering the citizen and then leaving as though nothing happened). Like I said, none of it is played as "hey look how ridiculous". It's just normal.

I also love that there are hover bikes, vtol airships, laser guns, a 3 barreled shotgun, explosive/electrical/fire/what-the-hell-ever rounds for every weapon, hilarious **** like being able to call in a tank which will magically appear next to you to aid you in the fight, and of course the giant purple dildo (which is somehow an incredibly formidable weapon).

Another great thing is that any vehicle you store in the garage is readily available at ANY garage you own. None of this **** like in GTA: SA where you'd spend tons of money customizing a car and then roll it two seconds later just to see your money go up in flames. In SR3 you just go get a brand new copy of that car from your garage. When your garage includes cars, trucks, motorcycles, armored cars, semi trucks, humvees, tanks, fighter jets, attack helicopters, hover bikes, and floating gunships, you're on your way to causing some serious mayhem.

The easiest way to explain the feeling of SR3 is to imagine that at some point the folks at THQ played GTA4 and Just Cause 2 in the same weekend, and then said "you know, these are both a lot of fun, but they're really kind of tame."

EDIT: Skyrim is a very close second, but SR3 just appealed way to much to the nutjob in me.

Skyrim no question. Portal 2 comes second though, but for replayability and depth Skyrim takes it.

Minecraft did the most for me this year. I played relatively few games. Only ones I did, I really enjoyed. DX:HR was great. Terraria also makes me very happy. I'm playing Bioshock for the first time right now, it's very fun.

TBH, I haven't played SR3, all I know is that Sasha is in it. Hence why I didn't vote in the poll. I do like me some Sasha though.

Skyrim with Deus Ex: HR (heheh, HR), as a close second. Portal 2 probably in 3rd place, although I haven't finished the SP. Talking about which, I didn't see that many Massassians play Portal 2 in multi on Steam. Hmm. :D The only other game on the list I've played is Batman: Arkham City, and, while insanely fun, I'd take Enzio over Batman any day.

Antony pretty much summed up what I was going to say.
Basically Saints Row the Third gets my vote for favourite by a long long way.
Batman would probably be my second though
Skyrim is third even though I've got more time logged in it than Batman and Saints Row. It takes more time but that doesn't make it more fun.

I didn't vote because I've only played Portal 2, which I thought was great.

I did enjoy Saints Row The Third, but not as much as Saints Row 2. It suffers from a serious lack of pacing - As much fun as it is to have a penthouse and parachute and access to a lot from the start, it also seriously hampers any sense of achievement you get through playing the game. I also found that the ending felt a little flat and anticlimactic. Also, annoyingly the game never awarded me the achievement for finishing Act 2, so I thought I still had loads more game left when the ending credits started rolling.

I love Skyrim, it's a wonderful game, no doubt. I think it's given me some of the best gaming moments of my life. That being said, Portal 2 is the most polished, complex, complete game ever made. I consider it a game with pretty much no flaws.

sounds like u need some critical distance, bro

there are some clear flaws... I'm not saying they're dealbreaking or anything of the sort, but I think it might be more accurate (correct me if I'm wrong) to say that the game hit your personal sweet sweet sweet spot, and so what flaws there are kinda fade to black?

(I really really liked Portal 2)

Portal 2 was pretty good, as is Uncharted 3.

Driver San Fransisco was one of my favourites thanks to nostalgia.

I've put way more hours into Skyrim than Arkham City, but I really, really liked Arkham City, so I chose that.

Portal 2's story was good, and I LOVED the characters, but the gameplay....
Eh, it just didn't feel like a puzzle game anymore. It's more of a "find the blank wall".
Well, it's still a puzzle game really, it's just more like "spot the difference" instead of... you know I don't even know what I'd classify Portal 1 as in the world of 'irl' puzzles.
It was still fun and everything, just not as fun to play or anywhere near as challenging as the first game in my opinion

Glad to see I'm not the only Batman lover.

Yeah, I still can't put my finger on what portal 2 lacks that the first one had. I thought it was just nostalgia, but I recently replayed them both and the first is just more fun. I still can't really hold it down, but there's just something about the flow and slow learning curve of the first one. Each element is not only introduced, but is then expanded in a way that I never expected. Then it's repeated a few times. Then it's overlapped with other former lessons and an element of twitch/motion is incorporated as an overall test.

The second one built up in the same way, but only really felt like it had one major arc of difficulty, and each element was introduced in the middle of just grasping a former concept, and never really getting to fully explore it, instead of a series of arcs build upon the last. This is all in spite of the first game being shorter, if I recall? There also didn't seem to be very many puzzles, as mentioned, as well as an overall lack of twitch/catapulting puzzles.

The multiplayer was a lot more puzzly, but kind of tedious. Cazor and I played through it, and we didn't have headphones. I should give it another try now that I do, because I liked the figuring out part, it was just kind of frustrating to "figure" a thing out with someone else, and also not be able to adequately describe what to do in order to solve it, and a mic would probably help.

I feel like I'm missing some awesome game from earlier in the year or something, but maybe not, so I guess I'll say Skyrim.

I voted Batman. It was the game that kept my attention longest and still go back to when I'm bored. Getting those riddler trophies, while infuriating at time, is freakin addicting as hell. Plus the story was excellent as well. Gameplay was polished in my opinion and the voice cast was pretty sweet.
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

Most of the games that came out this year I didn't like or I didn't play. There are some Japanese things I like and Total War IS overrated. However, I like what Shogun 2 did with the series. Red Orchestra 2 was another 2011 game I liked, but it was far from the best game of the year. Maybe if I played Anno 2070 I'd call that game of the year.
