I was going through the Holiday Logos from previous years and needless to say, I was impressed! There are a ton of really talented people around here!

What I would like to do is have a monthly "community event" similar to the logo contests.

I'd like to have something unique each month that we do year after year. To make sure things don't get stale and to keep the community involved in the evolution of the site.

Already I can see say two level contests per year. Plus the Holiday Logo contest. That's 3 months, but I need to think of 9 more events!

Any suggestions?

Here are some other things I have thought of just now:

Retro month. Everyone take a few days off to do a project for an old game. Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, MotS count. The community could get together at the end, play the mods/levels, etc. I'm not saying a contest, but more like some sweet deathmatch levels that only take a few days to create (most experienced mappers can do this, I think).

Annual Jedi Awards. Vote for most most influential mapper, tutorial writer, best sp level in each game, best mp level in each game, etc.

Any other ideas? What do you think of mine?

How about "Hidden gold" level day? We can reconize those good levels that didn't get much attention.

How about a tournament of some sort?

How about Massassian...comedy?

How 'bout specific items, such as theme related work? IE some months you choose a theme, and people must team up and create something along that theme. It could be a thematic COG, map, model, tutorial, etc.

Just a thought.

Hmm perhaps one month each year you make a compilation of the best short stories around a specific theme.

eg, write a story revolving around the fictional Massassi Temple. Then collect the best and make a compilation of them in PDF format at the end of the month.

I'm sure there are some good writers here. Hell it might even bring Nebula out of the woodwork again, you just -know- he's lurking there somewhere

Just a few random ideas;

I'd love to see another level contest for JK.. but there really needs to be more participation, otherwise me and a couple other editors will end up with more than one level in the pack!

In addition to holiday logo contests, we could have halloween logo contests!

I was gonna say level of the month.. but that's already the way it is anyways.

I like the awards idea. It could be a new feature on the site. Every month, people could vote for the most influential mapper, texture artist, etc, and at the end of the month, the results could be revealed in a news post on the main page.

Does this have to be a games-only website? How about short-story submissions?

Massassian of the month? You post some facts about a well known editor or member of the community, and then people try to guess who it is.

How about general graphics contests, Not just logos.

Monthly massassi cartoon?

I agree that we might want to consider looking beyond the spectrum of JK/JO/JA. One of the best things about Massassi is the community, and that is far more important than any informational focus of the site. (Although indeed, the latter is quite important on its own.)

Community JK events hosted by #massgames could work. I wouldnt mind seeing more people come by the room to play more often either, we've had some great games in the past few weeks, on some of flexies maps.

We did an album in the cantina last year...some original creations, some singing existing songs, some....parody-ish. It was a LOT of fun and I strongly recommend giving it a go here....just don't take it too seriously

We're in the middle of doing another one now....even though only a few of us, you know, have musical talent. I'm not one of them. (GONK MADE ME DO IT. NO REALLY.)

Well geez - there have just been so many good ideas mentioned so far, although I think the cream of the crop so far has to be (in no particular order):

1) I like Flexor's idea of a monthly Massassi cartoon ('tho not too sure about the chef feature.... ) - everyone in favour of comedy, raise your lightsabers!

2) Echoman's "'Hidden Gold' level day" sounds like a fun-trip down "Nostalgia Road", although come on - we can't let Drazen Isle win every day.... can we...

3) Japih's encouragement for short stories - it's always great to read some good old fan-fiction

4) Gebohq's suggestion for "Massassi Music" sounds like it could be fun (anyone noticing how this could eat into a sever's disk-space resource yet?? )

5) Level Packs ... well ... what more can I say - everyone likes creating maps and more people love playing them - enough said... all hail the "Return of the Massassi Map Pack" (...*possibly*...)


As for my own thoughts (I have those ?!? - wow...) - along the "Annual Jedi Awards" - what about most improved mapper? Maybe most useful user-made plug-in to help the community? Although, if this is going to spark off heated rivalries, maybe not such a great plan of campaign. That said, I'm in favour of just about eveyone else's suggestions (could you tell)

...but not the "Chef" feature, Flexor - whatever possessed you...

I used to think Annual Awards were a good idea before I actually ran one for the old DF/JK magazine Darkness Falls.

I tell ya, some of the emails I got from people who were pissed that this person or that won a certain award was pathetic.

Nothing brings out the worst in people like bruised egos.

I'm not saying we should scrap the idea completely....just...er...treading carefully would be wise

I'd like to see more level contests for JK and JO/JA... but have a different theme each month--IE:

Jan - JK Domination level contest (look for domination under levels to find cogs)
Feb - JO Duel level contest
March - JA Seige contest...

The key thing I think is with JK is to bring back vitality back into it. That's why I think Domination, JK Arena, and Infiltrate! contests would be great. Also, I'm working on cogging for JK Assault -- If there is interest, I could have you look at it Brian.

Similar things have been done - there is some clash in taste, and overall it's sort of a pointless endevour. I like the other ideas though.. we should have a month where everyone has a go at redesigning an aspect of Massassi (with green) to see what kind of creativity and lack thereof we have here on the design side. Just an idea.
