I'm pretty sure that was inspired by the original Unreal Tournment and not UT3.

You misunderstand, this map: http://www.massassi.net/levels/files/216.shtml was inspired by the original UT. THIS map: http://www.fileplanet.com/files/220000/224574.shtml above is a remake for UT3 inspired by the Jedi Knight map.

Would you happen to be the author of the JK map? What inspired you to post about this?

I am not, Bug gave me his permission to remake the level for JO, but it never came out right. Tried again in HL but the jump pads didn't work. This time I got it right, it only took me 5 years:nonono: (or a week with UT3ED)

Why would you host that on fileplanet argh.

I remember trying to remake that UT map in JK. I spent 4 months just trying to make the Earth skybox look anything better than pure crap.

Interesting indeed

I wanna say for you to flesh out more geometry, but I don't know, it kinda has a nice, clean aesthetic.

@Tibby, You're right, I'll go put it on MegaUpload lol

@Whelly, JK Skyboxes were uuuuuuuuugly

@ECHOMAN, I plan on making a more modern remake, but I wanted to try this out and I'm extreamly happy with how it came out because of the nostalgia.

@ORJ_JoS, It was, I loved playing JK on the Zone every day. My favorite was Arsenal3 or SS3 guns on Morpheus

texture alignment on the red, diagonal pipes (the ones near the upper left corner) is not entirely accurate though. >.> <.<

For sure. I don't think I ever met him, but reading his stuff in Saga and SoD makes me think he'd be entertaining. :awesome:

edit.. sorry...

Where did the textures come from?

You'd be surprised how many of them are ripped straight from JK. They look much cleaner with a better graphics engine and the bump maps I made for them. Not to mention a little anisotropic filtering.

Direct rips from the game being completely illegal, pray Lucasarts doesn't somehow stumble upon it.
2012-02-02, 2:52 PM #21
That was where my point was leading to. Why don't you check out some of the HQ textures on the jkhub (Sorry cannot remember the project or author but I'm sure someone can chime in)

Yeah I have a minor in law, come at me bro.

Edit: For starters, "Completely Illegal" is just silly inaccurate because its not even a crime, its a civil infraction or Tort.

It might be a crime. By US copyright law any distribution of copyrighted works within a 180 day period having a total retail value of more than $1,000 is prosecuted as criminal infringement (which, on the internet, you can burn through pretty quickly depending on what fictional number is considered the retail value.)

It's definitely a tort. You could reasonably argue for fair use, since a few textures is not a substantial portion of the work. However, it's a breach of contract if you ever agreed to the EULA.

That said, nobody will ever give a **** except for the EULA pedants on this site. This is entirely for historical reasons. The JK community was always nuts about it, even going as far as requiring the JK CD in order to run any of the level editors.

Reclassify it all you want, it's still not allowed. Of course the likelihood of Lucasarts ever coming after you for it is basically nil, it's still wrong. If it was a Massassi submission it would be rejected (if for no other reason than safe harbor problems).

I imported the original textures so that users could have an authentic experience with the port. Legal ramifications aside, if it's wrong to borrow this small part of a game they aren't even supporting anymore so that a handful of people who care can get a small amount of enjoyment from it then I think you have a funny moral compass. I'm excited about what I am able to deliver to fans of this map. LA is free to pursue Legal action if they want too.

I'd play this with you as I love UT3 and Morpheus was one of my favorite JK FF-guns maps, but my PC gives me a "A disk read error has occured" every time I boot it up apparently. Are you part of the Massassi Steam circle / community / how it's called?

Well, it's not like Massassi takes UT3 submissions so it's all fine! However, it can be pseudosafely assured that LEC won't give a hoot about stuff like this (unless their lawyers get really bored). After all, I'm sure they are aware of the most popular SW mod in existence (MovieBattles II) and might have even taken a peek inside the containers.

Lucasarts has a history of being *******s about this. They're not Valve, they don't appreciate the modding community at all. I'm fairly sure if LA was aware and didn't have bigger fish to fry, they'd be all over it. That's just the way that company does things.

I bet nobody on the lucasarts staff could even recognize the textures haha

I think anyone even related to actual development of JK probably doesn't work there anymore.

Even better, they're working on Movie Battles III that utilizes the Unreal Development Kit.

Here's hoping it won't get sniped by LucasArts. If I remember correctly, the only instances when LEC has really shut mods down were if the mods in question were for non-Star Wars games and featured lightsabers. I vaguely remember mods for Quake 2 and BF1942 (at least) getting cease-and-desisted due to that reason.

Just a reminder that The Infernal Machine has a clause in the EULA strictly prohibiting modding. Lucasarts are a bunch of dicks.

I don't see how it's a problem if nobody's making money off of this. If anything, it's a credit to their work.

And anyone with common sense would agree with you.

However, lawyers are not known for their common sense.
