He pretty much set the standard for the used-future look. I have admired his work since I was a kid and over the last year or so I went back through it all and was amazed at how many films and shows he influenced through his concept art. It's a sad bit of news to start my day with, but overall I'm happy for his influence in my life.

Yeah, it's crazy how George Lucas openly admits that McQuarrie designed the majority of notable characters, locations, spacecraft, etc... from Star Wars. The man was responsible for virtually the entire visual aesthetic of the original trilogy.
