I went to the midnight premier of Prometheus last night. I absolutely loved the film, but I went into it without any expectations of it at all. If Alien was a horror film and Aliens was an action film, Prometheus is a mystery film, and a damn good one, in my opinion. If you're not sure, I wrote a review you can check out.

Anybody else watch or plan on watching this movie? What did you think and why?

I am a HUGE alien fan (I love the first 3) and, as i made clear in the Blade Runner squeal thread, Im a HUGE Ridley Scott fan.

Duelists, Alien, Blade Runner, Ledgend, Matchstick men, Thelma and Leuise, gladiator all amazing movies.

Having said that, Ill say this about Prometheus: I have been waiting ever since i can remember to find out about the space jockey.....

THE ****ING SPACE JOCKEY!!!!!!

IM sooo excited, i could combust in my pants!

I just don't see how they are going to get around having xenomorphs and hiphuggers abound.

I shall reserve judgement until i see it.

I can tell you right now this is not the movie you want it to be, and if you go in with these expectations you are going to be supremely disappointed.

nevermind my "that doesn't quite match up" i just realized this movie takes place on a different moon (LV-223 instead of LV-426)

i guess when james cameron makes prometheuses we'll get that "now it matches up with alien" ...

I had no idea that it was supposed to be an Alien prequel. So I saw it tonight thinking "wtf Ridley Scott is just ripping off his own movie" with all the similaities between the two movies. Then after the movie it was explained to me and I was like "ooooh..."

Anyway, that was one hell of a surgery scene.

Yep, keep an open mind with this movie

I saw it last night, I wasn't dissapointed in it, I just thought it was going to be different but thats ok it was fun to see and discuss afterwards

My only real complaint is that they over complicated a few things that didn't need to be such as the life cycle to get to an alien...so a pre-alien is human who drinks the black ****, has sex with a woman, then the egg that comes out of a woman hatches into a form of face hugger who face hugs a space jockey, who then has a pre alien burst from his chest...like wtf, why would you make that how the aliens are created, that just raises questions on how the aliens were found on a different planet (where humans haven't been) and how does the alien reach its actual final form...I really wish they didn't show that pre-alien at the end because I think the audience wouldn't gotten the idea that some other species who wasn't spacejockey or human got infected with the black goop and turned into monsters but now they just shoe-horned it in there and it makes no sense...ALSO SOMEONE MAKE A GIF OF DAVID SHAKING THE COCKTAIL SHAKER LIKE A BOSS

I actually got part of that, but agree with the majority of what you said, there Couchman. As far as the pre-alien, I kinda went with the ship pilot. The place was a military experiment base. It was the prototype to the alien, so they had to refine the birthing process. Make it more efficient. At least, that's what I take away. I agree though, they should have not shown that in this movie.

Went into it thinking "I know this isn't Alien. The best I can hope for is a good movie."

Wow. Prometheus definitely isn't Alien, but certainly stands well on its own!

Nope, I'm gonna blow your mind. The space jockey is actually Ellen Ripley.

Thats right she traveled back in time... as a clone.

Just saw it.

Having never seen Aliens, i found it pretty enjoyable.

Except for the surgery scene. The way she ripped the umbilical cord, and then the staples. I was cringeflailing in my seat.

ed: Also David is the best character, by far

Eat **** and die.......

Or at least see alien. I like the first predator alot, though some will disagree.

We can all certainly agree that Predator 2 was not as bad as alien 4.

Riply plays basketball? Xenos underwater? Winona Ryder?

No... not in my movie.

Im sure alot of you will disagree with this as well but i LOVE alien 3.

I like it wayyyy better than Aliens :colbert:

Fincher's take on alien is more than awesome. The charecters in his films are alwys depicted so lovingly and so interistingly that I have no trouble believing in this tangible world on Fury 161. In paticular, i like the extended version, where ripley just falls in the water and dies, and the alien pops outta the ox's chest instead of the dogs.

Aliens, while still exceedingly good, didnt seem like an alien movie. The action was not what bothered me, but rather the nonchalant way in which all these marines easily kill these xenomorphs. It took the power away from the creature. Though i have to admit, i do love Paul Reiser, and Bill Paxton.

Got to see Prometheus today, and being a fan of a lot of the Alien and Predator movies (I generally am on the same boat as the majority as far as which are good and bad) and hearing that Prometheus wasn't meant to be an Alien movie... it really was. And I'm fine with that. I'm not gushing over the movie, though I do definitely think it fits the franchise well as a prequel.

I didn't think the Alien at the end was supposed to be /the/ Alien, though it certainly showed the most similarities. I think it was just more or less establishing that the whole "Alien" lifespan was to evolve from their 'host', and since the "engineers" were very human-like, the alien that eventually came out of him was very close to the traditional 'alien' from the series. It's definitely a movie that could lend itself to another to fit between it and Alien, and it could also stand well as it is.

I think what they meant was that it isn't a prequel that directly leads to the events of Alien. It does take place before Alien and in the same universe, but it doesnt cause Alien to happen

i was mad at first because it wasnt what i expected it to be deep down inside, but then i got my head out of my ass when i thought about it the next day

the only scene that still makes me mad was the final one before the credits with "the cameo"

It's really open for interpretation. People are taking away from it all kinds of different things...

Here's my interpretation.

In the very first scene, where that guy drinks the black goo, we see his DNA being broken down, and then a new DNA being formed. Later on, when they're in the room with the urns, worms are crawling around and come into contact with the black goo. Then later, when the two lost crew members arrive in that room, they're being attacked by an Alien version of those worms. It's my belief that every time the Alien finds a new species as a host, it takes its DNA and develops in a new direction. So there isn't really a 'final version' of the Alien, it's a species that adapts constantly and evolves into new forms depending on the hosts they're using.

Still I feel like I'm missing some kind of clue. Why was that guy in the first scene drinking that goo in the first place? And why did David betray the crew? Yeah, he was working for that old geezer, but he was only looking for rejuvenation, right?

ORJ-

He was seeding life on a planet. Also I dont know that David was betraying on purpose. I think he was just seeing what the goo would do out of curiosity.

Yeah, could be, but David also says that 'Sometimes it is necessary to destroy in order to create' or something to that effect. (In an answer to the question why the Engineers would want to destroy humanity.)

I was reminded of the android in Alien who admired the species for its perfection. It's not very clear, in any case. I think I may need to see it again, in order to understand it better.

I liked the movie, though I've had similar concerns that were voiced in this thread:

Why the heck did David infect Dr. Shaw's bf? What point was there to it? If he wanted to infect her so that he'd have sex with his gf and she'd give birth to an alien, it's just too far-fetched. Though he did seem to want to keep the alien inside her when he could have just as easily helped her.

The first scene -- the alien Engineer guy commits suicide. Why?

The two dudes who get killed first -- come on, you're in a freaky alien cave, you're scared, and you decide to venture away from the group? How stupid is that?

Similarly, nobody on the ship seemed to really care much about them. Everyone was busy making luvz when they were screaming their lungs out dying in terrible ways.

And finally, the blonde chick, Weyland's daughter, seemed really cool and all -- I thought she deserved more than to die like a little ***** because she decided to run STRAIGHT AWAY FROM the ship that was falling on her instead of sideways. Come on. Character had so much promise.

1. I imagine he was just seeing what the goo would do (maybe to save weyland?). Also David did have that "You always want to kill your parents." Could refer to him being an Android.

2. seeding the planet with life. Probably a necessary sacrifice in his eyes.

3 & 4. Shaved head guy was high. Plus, what could go wrong! Nobody seemed to care because they figured it was just an empty cave.

5. I think her characters subtexts were cool. Weyland clearly preferred David over her. She wanted nothing more than for her father to die so she could take over the company. I imagine the fact she didnt run sideways was more of a symbolic death.

I'm glad I managed to stay out of this thread and avoid reading the spoilers until I saw it a few hours ago.

I'm a little surprised by how fast the Prometheus reached it's destination. Granted they didnt say exactly how far they travelled, but given there are only like a dozen stars within 10 light years of Earth it must have been fairly fast. When most SciFi books/shows use hypersleep it's to provide a plausible explanation for crossing vast distances while respecting the speed of light limit. Apparently in the the Alien's universe it's just for resource conservation. I don't remember if they said how long they were in hypersleep for the first Alien movie, but apparently Ripley was asleep for 50yrs between Alien and Aliens.

I liked David, he seemed to have alot more personality than the other Androids we've seen but I guess that's to be expected since he was Weyland's personal Android. Although many of the crew and David himself repeated said that he didnt have feelings or desires there were clearly some concepts/things that he liked. I liked when (I'm paraphrasing because I lack an eidetic memory) David asked Charlie - 'Why did you make me?', 'Because we could.' , 'Imagine how disappointed you will be if you get the same answer.'

The engineer/spacejockey's response immediately after being awakened didnt seem very logical at all to me, but I guess there's alot of possible explanations to that too. Finally having survived the destruction/crash of his ship, why didnt he simply go to one of the other ships? Maybe he was just pissed :)

iirc the Nostromo was on a 12 month journey back to Earth...Ripley was asleep for so long in Aliens because her shuttle drifted completely through known space without being detected. (at the end of Alien her log entry says she expects to be picked up within a few weeks)

David was so awesome. Favorite android in any movie.

RE point 3
David clearly said something to piss him off. That or he was pissed his (flawed) creation was waking him up. Perhaps the other ships werent armed?
