Bored but serious question about spiders
2004-01-01, 7:33 PM #1
Do you think or know if a spider would go blind by shining a laser in it's eyes? I know a human would go blind, hence the warning on every single laser object. But since a spider is smaller, obviously built differently.. but wouldn't an eye be an eye no matter what?

Try it, if the spider bites you several times subsequent to the laser, then no.

Depends on the power of the laser.

No. The articulite membrane on the spider's upper corporal hippocamperus would protect it's inner hypothermiatic layer from damage by the laser.

Dunno what the heck ya said, but sounds like it could be true. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I know I need to get out more, but I was watching Eight Legged Freaks. I just thought it would be kinda interesting.. One time when I woke up, there was a spider hanging a foot away from my bed. (Just barely behind a fan that would've blown it right on me. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/eek.gif] )

I was just thinking, if you could blind a spider, it couldn't run strategically, and thus making it easier to -squashh-. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

You need to blind the spider first? That's kind of pathetic [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Blinding it would be harder than squashing it.

Yes, you can blind it. It has retinas too, which is what is damaged by the laser. The image which is transferred onto the retinas via the lens (or lenses if the subject has compound eyes) is then transferred throught the optic nerve.

Despite all these peoples scientific analyses, I'm going to say no. Simply because I could never get it to work on ants. :|

Here's something a little more fun, though! Make an ant your pet! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]
You know those really BIG black ones? They usually hang around like big trees and stuff... catch one of those guys and pull off his little antennae, and he'll run around on your hand like a lost... um... ant... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]
(best reasoning I can come up with is that those are his sense of smell, and therefore cannot sense his trail to tell where he's been and/or where he's going)

Well considering all 8 eyes are usually grouped together closely...yes. Although there is one spider that exists in a desert that has only one eye and spits venom.

It was just a thought, mostly I think it'd be fun to watch'em run around (literally) blindly. Especially those ones that come up in the tub.

I blinded a fly once with a laser... it tried to fly away and kept running into the wall. It was funny.

I freaking hate spiders with a freaking strong passion, but that doesnt stop me picking them up with a newspaper and jar and taking them outside when I find one, let alone torturing the little thing to death [http://forums.massassi.net/html/eek.gif]

If you had Dr. Evil's laser you could do it.

(the answer is yes btw)

I have a 500mW (half a watt) laser here and you'd have to hold it to your eye for a few seconds before it would start to do any damage. So like MikeC said, it also depends on how powerful the laser is.
In saying that, I still don't let it get near anyone's eye's when I'm fiddling with it.

It could also give the spider lasik eye surgury, and it would be a spider with enhanced eyesight. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Evad, do you mean 500 mW, or 500 µW? I'm not entirely sure what the "w" means. (I'm assuming m, because you said half a watt)

BTW, where did you get such a big laser?

get a laser strong enough, and you wont need to blind the thing.

I doubt he meant µW cause isn't that really really small?

m means milli. There are 1000 milli's in 1.
µ means micro. There are 1000000 micro's in 1.

The laser I have is small really. I worked at the worlds largest laser manufacturer for almost 4 years before they closed down the Canadian operation and laid us all off.
(you can put 2 and 2 together and kinow where I got the laser from)

Some of the lasers we made wieghed in at 500kg (including the control panels) and would burn the eyes right out of your head before you knew you had been hit by it.
