but presumably 95% of the games won't work anyway?... so what's the point? The steam client will run, sure but it's useless without the games...

The hope is really that Steam will drive the mainstream adoption of specific, easily-supported configurations (e.g. Ubuntu+Unity and Mint+Cinnamon).
