Are there any hardware smarties out there?
2003-12-31, 4:06 AM #1
Well, this is prolly the wrong place for a thread like this, but it's worth a shot. I've got a hardware problem. I've got a USB 2.0 80GB external harddrive, and it's plugged into a 2.0 port. Well, windows xp claims it's working properly, but I don't have it on my drive list. Weirdest thing is, it's worked before on this computer...

Anybody help?

You need to initalize it before you format. Press F1 to bring up Windows Help or whatever, and search for "initialize".

"Initialize"? Heh. I guess thats Microsoft's word for "partition".

If it worked before, the nit aint a partition or format problem. Try this... Right-click on My Computer, and click on "Manage". Click on the item that says "Disk management". If your hard drive is in the list, select it, and see what the partition details are. If it isnt in the list, something is screwed up...

I had a similar problem on a uni computer. Plugged the drive into a USB 1.1 port and it didn't appear in the drives list, but it appeared in the hardware list. I'm assuming that it's some sort of USB driver problem, but I'm not too sure.

Maybe next time I finish a level, I should post pictures in here, so that more people will look at it! I mean, what's the point of the forum in the first place, if it's not going to be used?

At least ME didn't have some corny software subscription service that required you to pay like $10 a month to use some software for the OS...

OSX is definitely not the worst operating system. If I had the money for their overpriced hardware, I'd actually consider getting it, since it's based on FreeBSD. Also, it can run Photoshop and other nice applications. Way better than trying to get Wine to run Photoshop for me.

Lindows is based on Debian; and 'Click n Run' is merely a front-end for apt-get. Apt-get is still there, and you can use it without paying ay fees.
....So, in short, you dont have to pay the fee...

Sorry guys, wasn't checking comments, and I wasn't expecting so many so fast!

GoY, you need to get your head out where you can see the sun for a while...

Okay, Situation: It has been formatted before, when it worked, but now it won't even show up on my drives list. No partitions, nothing special about it, it just decides not to work. It could be a driver problem, but the only driver I've found that fits it anywhere remotely is a Windows98 driver. So, that's the situation.
Sorry again for the long wait or reply.

BTW, with this being my first time to read all these comments I'd like to say:
Linux is the SAME as Windows: It's a totally different OS. Linux is for hackers, and winodws is not. Plain and simple. But, the arguments in between are very funny. I love to be part of them.

Did you check disk management to see if it's showing up? For some wacky reason it might not be partitioned. If it's not partitioned it will not show up in the drive list.

Who's the manufacturer? I have an 80GB USB2.0/IEEE1394 external drive from BUSLink. Their support is terrible. I couldn't get the drive to be detected, but eventually I figured out that the USB cable had to be plugged into the HD before I plugged the power cable into it; it's the same for an IEEE1394 interface. Try http://www.usbman.com/winxpusbguide.htm , I found it useful.

Darth, I think that's it. I'll try that out. Yeah, I've been messing around with the partitions, and long story short, I deleted all the ones my computer created (compaq ... *GAG*). Anyway, I think that's it, it just seemed like I needed to tell windows "hey, I DO have an extra drive."
Hey GoY, sorry about that... that was kinda dumb to write, but if you wanted to get ANYTHING accomplished, be polite and considerate. When you nag and call people idiots, it's most likely they won't do what your saying.

Thanks again Darth.

Yeah, when you have a fresh, unpartitioned drive, it won't show up in the drives list. Since the drives list really only shows logical drives.

Also drives with partitions that Windows can't recognize won't show up. (Like a drive that you just use for Linux.)
