Whats with all these games being leaked?

First off we had the Doom III e3 alpha. Then the HL2 source code/"playble beta". Painkiller was leaked a few days ago, so was STALKER: Oblivion Lost, and finally World of Warcraft has been leaked.

What do these companies do? Leave free alpha disks in the lobby?

None of this is legal.

Can you talk about the content of these leaks in this forum, as long as you're not providing any links or hints on where to obtain them?

I've been visiting some forums, and apparently, it has in fact leaked. Not a beta, but an alpha version of the game.

I'm rather upset by the Stalker leak. The company making it is rather small, and the game looks incredible even in its pre-alpha stage. So now the company has more stress added and the release date will be pushed back.

It's not the beta, it's still in a pre-alpha stage. And, you're right, nothing has been confirmed about the released date being pushed back, but there's quite a bit of chatter about it.

Probably because of the whole deal with HL2. Source code was stolen there, not just a build. Getting just a build stolen shouldn't set you back much, if at all.

I don't see any problem with it. As long as the posts aren't promoting or perpetuating illegal activity (i.e. giving links like you said)

personally I find it hard to believe they are leaked, I mean first doom3, then JA, then HL2, now 10 other games...

it's something like the 21st century version of shareware....

I think thats code meaning he obtained a copy of the alpha :-D.

I think the devs are leaking 'em... I seem to remember ID saying it was ok to download Doom three just don't "share" it.

It's really not surprising that leaks like this occur. I would assume that many of the people involved in game development are slightly younger, computer savvy types (duh!). This appears to be a demographic that generally embraces and/or defends the practices of illegally reproducing and distributing copyrighted material such as software, music, and movies. Seems like a small step that these leaks occur. Now, in the case of the Half-Life code that was a hacker's doing, I believe, but I definitely wouldn't rule out insider help.

It may not be legal to possess a copy of an Alpha, but i wouldn't be surprised if Id intentially leaked the Doom 3 Alpha... If I were one of the Id crew, I'd find quite a bit of humor in leaking it... Especially if they had planned on changing some of it anyway... And from what little I know about Id, they would most likely have no setbacks due to such an occurence...

I still say Valve just said it was leaked, but nothing was actually leaked, so they could finish a game that wasnt finished
