Legend of the Five Rings

Well here's the thing. Back in the day, like 5 years ago probably [freshman/sophomore year of hs; that dates me a little], i would play L5R with a couple of friends during lunch now and then. I had a rather fun Naga deck [which has long since kippleised].

Now i've recently been kinda considering getting back into it, sentimentality and such i suppose, but i'm a bit bewildered. There seems to be approximately 27 different sets chronicles paths whatever, and i have no idea which is current or compatible, if older ones are obsoleted. Then they have this new diamond edition aimed at getting new players in i guess. And so on and so forth.

There crop up on ebay now and then these gold edition starters with like 8 decks and newbie instructions i guess, but they tend to disappear fairly quickly and be kinda pricey. And i don't know if theyre still orthodox or whatever.

Basically i would like to find a setup to re-learn and teach a friend to play with. Most ideally it would include a Naga starter [which seems to be a clan no longer in Diamond], as i was rather fond of them.

And i don't know if it's even still a decent game [or was at the time to be honest], Wizards of the Coast has kinda gone downhill in recent years and such.

So.. any input on how to go about this or whatever, would be very greatly appreciated.

Kthxbye.

Hey. I've been playing L5R since right before Gold Edition and I've stuck with it since then. I actually have to go to work now but when I get back I'll post all the details I can about the game. Just two quick things:

1. Wizards of the Coast no longer makes L5R. It was sold back to the original people who made the game. Alderac Entertainment Group. http://www.legendofthefiverings.com. And AEG (Alderac Entertainment Group) doesn't suck.

2. Magic still sucks. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Alright. I'm back now.

I started out with Magic and went to L5R. I like L5R more.

Anywho. Since AEG got control of L5R again it's been a lot better. Diamond edition is the first baseset that they actually put together and they did a well job. They got rid of some of the older factions like Ninja, Naga, Spirit, and Monk. Now the only playable factions/clans are:

Scorpion
Dragon
Crane
Phoenix
Lion
Unicorn
Mantis
Crab
Shadowlands
Ratling

In Diamond they brought back some of the old cards you were probably used to playing with. In addition, the sets that are currently legal for tournament play are as follows:

Fall of Otosan-Uchi
Heaven and Earth
Winds of Change
Diamond baseset
Reign of Blood

AEG recently released a "Learn to Play" set that comes with two fully constructed decks, an easy to follow rulebook with example game and the decks contain legal power rares to play with. The two clans it comes with are Lion and Shadowlands. It's around 31 dollars with tax.

If you just want to play and not worry about what's legal for tournament play and what not, the you can pick up Storms over Matsu Palace for a learn to play set. It should be really cheap and you can probably find them on ebay.

Other than that, www.legendofthefiverings.com should have a lot of information you need.

If you have any other questions I'll try to come back here and check it out. Otherwise, feel free to IM me at "Plural of Jesus".

Huzzah for Dud and Friends of Dud [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I'm a bit perplexed about Naga, like at the time at least i had a Naga starter, but it seems that all the references i can find to them now basically are as Shadowlands, did they just combine them in, or are those all outdated references, or.. [basically are they still a viable/playable clan, or is that list you provided the only ones still, excluding like Badger and Centipede and such as well].

However failing that, the training grounds set seems to contain shadowlands and lion, neither of which particularly appeal to me [though they may to my friend perhaps], is there other pairings, ideally one containing Ratling ? I've looked over that site fairly well and it doesn't seem likely but i figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. Oh, i suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask what it is exactly that makes that a learning edition, like what does it have beyond just the decks ? Would it be just as viable to get two starters on their own, or is there summat special about that set [aside from the special playguide and premeier cards whatever those consist of]

Thanks for the very good input

Yea, M:TG rocks, but it started going downhill when Hasbro bought WoTC. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]
It's still fun to play with friends though. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Eh? What are you talking about, trading cards? I could have sworn L5R was a roleplaying game.
