Most companies offer student editions for only a few hundred dollars.

hehe. Blender is very nice, the PLE edition is free, and there ARE student licences for $400, I think... (been a while since I checked).

And fish, they're good, damn good. But not worth 7 grand.

Oh, it might not be 7 grand. I know they have different prices for different reasons you'd be using it. I think the movie maker license is seven, the game making one was 3 or 4 last time I checked, I think.

Keep in mind those are liscenses.. You buy the rights to use their program with your game/movie/play/whatever.. So, if youre making a game, and raking in millions, $7,000 is a small price to pay

Yeah, I think they're clearly targeting a specific market. Presumably and as this thread prooves, there are alternatives for the casual user.

400 is still too much. I'm a damn college student and I could do a lot with $400. I could buy maya, but I would go hungry for a hell of a long time and I would be living in a cardboard box. (with no power to run maya anyway-- the elec. company would have cut my service by then.)

As far as making it expensive to counter piracy, people wouldn't turn to warez if they could get it for a reasonable price. $7000 is enough for a big down payment on a new car for most people. If you had to choose between a new car and maya, which one would you get?

It's not expensive because of piracy, it's expensive because of the market it's targetted towards. Not to mention it's insanely powerful and capable software.

Hell, it used to cost a whole lot more than that even. The price has gone down a ton.
2004-01-04, 3:45 PM #17
Pagewizard.. I'd get Maya. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Maya and 3DSMax are aimed at major graphics and game companies, not poor college students. If you were the market for the product you'd have a right to complain about the price. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

The fact is, companies that can effectively use this expensive software profit a great deal by having access to them. It's a serious investment, not a toy.

I use Jed, of course!
Why? 2 reasons:

(2) It's FREE!

Unfortunately, JED isn't very efficient for much outside of making cylinders and bends and cutting stuff up. And even then it's slow at that. :/

Couldn't have said it better myself...but I'll say it again!

Software like Maya and 3DSM are not made for hobbyists. They are very advanced, professional tools. If you can't see yourself paying that much, I can guarantee you that you would never even use half the features available.

Case in point: it's expensive for a reason, and that's the reason their are alternatives.

When I do 3d work, I demand nothing less than the best, even though I don't work in the industry [yet.] The fact that I may not use every feature is beside the point, I just want everything simply because it is available.

I hate eking out an existence using a cheap product when I know that there is something more expensive but has features that I may need.

Maya Unlimited *IS* nice though. I've used the demo (It beats hell out of Bryce) and a friend [name omitted] has a warez version and that is the best price of all. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

But there isn't always alternatives.
For example, Ritual released the tools for EF2 which included a exporter for their new model format but it was for 3dsmax ONLY.
there was talk of a Milkshape exporter but many months later it has yet to see the light of day.

Modding tools for Games are ment to be used by hobbyists, yet and increasing number of devs are releaseing 3dsmax/Maya only tools which leaves a large number of people SOL.

That's where we, the community, has to step in. Unfortunately I haven't seen much of that in recent years. People want all the tools and documents spoon fed to them, no one wants to make discoveries like we did for JK. That was all the community. The only help we had from LEC was comments in the code!

I'm sure Milkshape doesn't come close to the physics that Maya does. Not even 10% would be my guess.

on the episode when kenny dies for good, at the funeral, there is a pan from the ceiling to the cross, to the crowd-level which looks fairly nice.

and when they first started making it, they were filming cardboard cutouts a lot of the time, i remember seeing something on the TV about it.

also, for the price of Maya, i'd rather buy a car.

If your making a multi-billion dollar movie or game $7000 is nothing and thats what Maya is aimed at. The PLE is for people who want to learn it and then go into that industry.

Is it a rediculous price.
Yes.

I got 3DSMax from my uncle secondhand, not Warez though I think. His friend had a gaming license and gave him a copy having already had it okayed and all that. Frankly, I don't think the companies care about it being Warez'ed. Think about it, thousands of new game companies sprout up every year only to die, and each one of them pays a license for the software. No matter what, they're friggin rich. But yah, I have only the faintest idea how to use it/what everything needs. If anyone wants to teach me, feel free to AIM me. *coughcough*DJ YOSHMO*coughcough*
