FACIAL HAIR CHARITIES! AW YISS!

Beards for Boobs is a charity my buddy Ryan set up in hopes of raising $10,000 to the Breast Cancer Action foundation. Why beards? Beards are AWESOME. Come on!

Anyway, we're only 5 days into this and we've already reached $6,000! With 58 days to go I'm confident we're hitting the goal of $10,000 before I have anything that even resembles a beard. If you've got a few dollars to spare, please consider donating. You're just going to throw that money at a Steam Sale anyway, might as well help out a good cause!

Can you please tell me a little about why it's better to give money to this association than any other breast cancer research fund please? I can't donate money right now but I'm planning to give money to this in the future.

I don't specifically know why this one was chosen over the various other charities, but I do know that they have been wonderful to work with. They also have a great track record of political change, campaigns, and removing dangerous chemicals from the market. http://bcaction.org/about/history-victories/

What I like is that they spend a good amount on social awareness. You can throw a ton of money at the problem (or put a ribbon magnet on your car), but things won't change unless people are informed. They're trying to move past 'pink ribbon' support and actually get something done.

Social awareness of what? If you mean social awareness of their pesticide work and etc. then good for them. If you mean social awareness of the condition, like telling people to go to the doctor to get regular screenings, thats actually a bad thing... people smarter than doctors have been telling doctors to stop ordering routine mammograms because of the high type I error w/ it and biopsies. Lotta folk end up getting unnecessary treatment.

If it's not well known among doctors yet I think it's reasonable to believe they're just unaware. You could contact them and let them know where they can get better, updated information.

Jon - you're right. Saying "social awareness" was a lazy answer on my part.

I think you always run the risk of people thinking they know more than a doctor. In this case I do think BCA does a good job of informing about screening and treatment options. BCA also takes it a step further and discuss precautionary issues, environmental factors, policy change, and healthcare issues.

I'm sure there are other organizations doing this as well, but it seems to me that BCA is making a good effort to inform past treatment options.

You have to take stats to become a doctor, and the type I/II errors are well known for all screening methods (the type II error is what they study to determine efficacy). Doctors have all of the knowledge and skills to understand the hazards of routine screening, but they just... don't.

This isn't the thread for it, but the lack of statistical skill among doctors is one of many things I find objectionable about modern medicine. Their reputation for intelligence and competence is wholly undeserved.
