Is there any real reason to install this on a desktop machine? I don't see much benefit. I will absolutely want to get a media PC with this on it at some point, though.

Probably not although from what I've heard it's not particularly locked down, meaning it's as fully functional as any Linux Desktop OS. I'm hoping it get's enough support as a gaming platform so that I don't feel bad using SteamOS instead of Windows on future giveaway PC's.

I'm pretty excited about this, though I won't have time to fiddle with it for awhile. If I do get the time, I'll probably drop Ubuntu/XBMC on my iMac & install SteamOS--it's not a powerful system by any measure but it has served me well in the past for several Indie titles. If this turns out as well as I hope, I'll be purchasing a nice SteamBox & television (haven't had one in years). I can't wait to get my hands on one of the gamepads.
