I'm not trying to be obstinate, I grew up in an area said to have the largest number of Romany gypsies in the UK (it used to be a major fruit and hop farming area needing a lot of seasonal labour). After mechanisation of the farms, many of them settled down in permanent housing and there are still large active camp sites. So these aren't people who only exist as some exotic minority to me. Many of them call themselves gypsies and as I demonstrated earlier, even their own media and lobbying groups use the word. And if that isn't acceptable who is meant to be the arbiter of names for these people if not themselves?

A lot of Roma aren't cool with it, though. In cases where there's intra-group debate over the appropriateness of a term I tend to think it's better to err on the side of caution. NAACP still uses "colored" but I doubt that's really appropriate for white people in 2014 haha (American ones, not trying to connect this to the South Africa thing)

In America things are a little different because I'm pretty sure most people don't know any term besides "gypsy" and don't really have any conception of who they are apart from some vague stereotypes about carts and fortunes and curses, whatever (usually racist) cultural memories that European immigrants brought over. Since there aren't a lot of Roma in the USA people don't really know anything about them so if you are like "yo 'gypsy' is not a great term to use" people will usually just be like "huh what?"

"I am not a Jedi," the scarred man replied.

His opponent threw his sword at him without moving a muscle; it flew at the speed of a bullet, but before it could reach its target, a mind-screeching DZHHHHEEEEEEEE cut through the silence as a bright ray of concentrated light shot out from under the man's cloak and sliced the solid piece of steel in two. The shards stuck into the wall behind the man with the silver light sword, their burnt edges glowing like embers.

Not a light sword, I thought, more like a light saber, looking at the straight three-foot ray of silver light glowing around a core of impossible white.

The same razor sound assaulted my ears once more as a saber of red light extended from the other man's two-handed hilt, pulsating with energy. And then again, DZHHHHHHHHEEEEEEE, as an identical ray protruded from the other end. He twirled the light staff, slicing through the wooden tables in an arch of fire. The scarred man's friend jumped back and produced his own weapon, a light saber shining the brightest blue I'd ever seen.

"Neither are we," said the man with the twin blades.
