what's the problem with KotOR?
2004-01-05, 2:31 PM #1
I got a new Radeon 9800 Pro(yeah!) but it won't let me play kotor. The second I reach the main menu, it goes black and comes up with an error saying "Swkotor has caused an error in ATI09XXX.DLL" Please help.

Works fine with my 9800....did you update the game via the patcher? Got recent catalyst drivers too?

I used to have a similar problem with my 9600. Go to the ATI site and download the next-to-latest drivers. When KotOR was being developed, nVIDIA was the market champion, and BioWare coded KotOR without expecting ATI to make the strides that it has.

Actually the nVidia FX 5950 is supposed to be the Radeon 9800 XT's equal. That and the fact nVidia rules the budget market right now with the FX 5700 Ultra and the FX 5900 XT puts nVidia back in the lead IMO.

No. I tend to disagree.

it's like that for nvidia too.. you have to go through the company that made th laptop in other words... you are probably screwed (especially if your laptop is HP or compaq i know from personal experience that compaq doesn't understand the concept of driver updates and HP is no different)

nVidia doesn't own the budget card market. Hello, Radeon 9600 Pro=90 bucks? ATi has the potential, nVidia has the tech support. The only way nVidia>ATi is if you're a Linux freak. So in other words, GBK has no say in this conversation. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]. But anyways, I think that your problem may be the drivers for that, because I know plenty of people with ATi's that run it fine, and anything 9500 and up should run it about the same, seeing as how they're all basically the same card with different little things.

ATI's new cards warranty covers overclocking so ATI rules all, plus they are cheaped and preform just as well as the nVidia cards.

oh and it seems that this thread is being hijacked sorry i contributed to it [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Sorry to burst your bubble but the 9600 Pros go for around $150. Right now the best budget card you can buy is the $190 FX 5900 XT. Like I said, most bang for your buck.

i've seen enough of these ATI vs. Nvidia threads to know this will only end in tragedy....keep it on topic.

i've heard that it deinfalty a driver issue, might want to check the bioware forums...

http://swforums.bioware.com/viewforum.html?forum=80

don't have a ATI card but most folks seem to think that the 3.9 drivers are the best. Didn't have time to do a search for you, at home on 56k....ggrrr
