Budget or Mid-Range Gaming PC

Looking for advice on building up a budget or mid-range gaming PC. I no longer keep up with processor or graphics card updates so I pretty much know nothing about what is out there. This is the latest article I could find:

http://www.pcgamer.com/best-gaming-pc/

Any thoughts? I was thinking I'd re-use these components from my existing desktop:

SSD (just recently upgraded to it so I guess it's modern enough)
DVD drive (barely use it anyway)

Monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers

So I need:

Processor (last one I bought included a cooler/fan so I'm hoping the new one does, too; one I have now is an older core i5)

Motherboard (last one I bought was Intel, have been very happy with stability)

Ram

Graphis card (historically have preferred nvidia because the drivers are much better on linux; may install steamos if it ever gets decent so maybe a consideration)

Case

Power Supply

Recommendations? Budget maybe around a grand? But the cheaper the better as long as it's fast enough to run modern games and more importantly: runs stable.

(Update: also I'm not really interested in overclocking)

Here's my current computer setup (tho' it's 2+ years old now) for reference, shouldn't cost that much more (in America) even if you upgrade some crucial bits (CPU and GPU, I assume):

Linux has the best drivers? How's that? My admittedly limited experience points to the contrary.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Sorry, totally messed up my typing. I updated the post. I have preferred nvidia graphics cards because drives for these cards on linux are much better than the amd drivers on linux. Qualification being that I probably won't be installing linux on this box any time soon (although may try out steamos, which is linux-based, at some point).
