I can easily imagine a future, should humanity survive, where killing an animal would be considered almost as immoral as killing a man is today.
It may sound cheesy, but it makes sense: if we can close our eyes on our constant skinning / killing of animals en masse, we can close our eyes on killing each other just as easily. Most people do.
