The new trailer for The Last Jedi

Is it just me or does this trailer reveal significantly more of the movie than it should? Hard knowing without seeing the movie, but I hope that the apparent spoilers are head fakes, and that it gives away much less than it appears to.

I'll be going to see it, of course, but I wasn't very impressed with The Force Awakens so I'll go in with low expectations. My biggest gripe with the new movies is they feel like lighthearted superhero films. As someone who finds superheroes dull as hell, seeing the Star Wars fall into that makes me a little sad. Of course, it might surpass my expectations and I'll go in with an open mind.

At least we had Rogue One. If the other spin off movies are half as good, I don't really care what they do with the VIII and IX.

The scene with the AT-ATs and the outmatched little fighters on a large featureless plane is a callback to the Hoth Battle I'm guessing. Is this going to be ESB-lite like how the first movie was with ANH?

Maybe to some degree, but I think the whole set up is going to different. I believe that scene is supposed to be part of the ending, and it doesn't end how one would think.

Disney seems to do a lot of these superhero movies. Maybe they see it as a cash cow and are treating it as something to apply a formula to. Or maybe I am overthinking this.

To be quite honest I'm rather confused as to what I'm supposed to be getting out of these movies. A little nagging part of me is saying, "go see it!" But a much bigger part just shrugs....

Probably because they're just a Disney cash cow that they apply a formula to.

There's a reason Get Out was a huge financial success. Because out of all the same **** coming from Hollywood, it was one of the only things that stood out. I remember watching the trailer and wanting to see it, and that rarely happens.

My problem in general with the blockbuster fantasy and sci-fi movies this side of the millennium is that there is too much stuff going on, temporally and spatially: too many different things in sequence, and too much going on on the screen at once for any of it to have significance.

And frankly, it was George Lucas who started it when he turned the genre into a CGI contest with Attack of the Clones (and already to an extent The Phantom Menace).

There was a Star Trek movie from a year or two back that was just awful. Totally generic shoot `em up flick that didn't even feel like Star Trek.

Actually the only reason I'm not watching the trailer in this thread is because I hold out a tiny bit of hope that even Disney will probably do a better job than Lucas did with the prequels. In fact, I actually liked The Force Awakens at the time, but this was perhaps in part due to my extreme disposition to enjoy it, and the extreme contrast to the badness of the prequels.

Yup. Compare that to a movie like 12 Angry Men, which is literally shot in one room, and manages to be amazing in comparison.

I'm not the only one here bothered by what they're calling "porgs" am I? The sort of mini-penguin with huge eyes co-piloting with Chewbacca in the trailer. That's such a blatant kid-friendly thing designed to sell merchandise that it makes me sad. I realize these movies are intended for absolutely everyone on the planet and that kids are a huge part of that target audience, but I wish they hadn't made it so obvious that a committee got together and went: today we're doing a character that'll make kids go "mommy, I want one!"

The movie comes out December 15 as well, which cannot be a coincidence when it comes to selling merchandise.

But that's when he has his birthday (May 14, same day as mine!) and he's just an egoist.

But yeah, RotJ is when he began to really tap into that merchandising potential as far as actually designing the movies around it. The prequels took it to the next level by being largely vehicles for merchandising.

You're absolutely correct. Maybe our resentment towards George is not just limited to the prequels, but to starting a new ****ty way to make movies that are guaranteed to be successes.
