I have in my possession a paperback copy of Dark Forces: Rebel Agent, a storybook version of Jedi Knight featuring twenty-five color illustrations of our hero Kyle Katarn.



I don't recall this ever being discussed on this site, surprisingly. I'm planning on reading it soon. Please post questions here and I will get back to you

Oh man, we've got to have talked about these at some point. We certainly talked about the audio dramas they based on the books...

I've read all three. Soldier for the Empire, Rebel Agent, and Jedi Knight. This was like 15 years ago, so I don't totally remember if they were any good, but they did have some neato illustrations.

Woah. This really takes me back. I've read them, but like Saberopus, it was a long time ago. I wonder if those illustrations are floating around online somewhere.

Definitely possible I missed them--I don't think I knew they existed until a month ago when I was reference-hunting for my Nar Shaddaa environment. I definitely feel like I've seen some of these paintings before, though

Have you listened to the audio versions? They've got voice acting, SFX, John Williams score, the whole thing. They're not just narrated audiobooks. They are super dumb and amazing.

Oh man. I have the entire series, I think, hidden away somewhere. I loved them.
I can't wait for the day schools get the money they need, and the military has to hold bake sales to afford bombs.

I still have all three hardcover versions and read them when I was 12 or 13 years old. I remember them being pretty good, and like everyone else has said, the visuals were incredible. I especially remember a pretty disturbing image of Morgan Katarn's head on a spike (something Maw makes reference to right before Kyle kills him).

This one just has some text on the back--maybe the hardcover version is different?

Star Wars traumatized child-me when the first Ewok Adventure movie ended with the family hugging and the narrator saying "love is the strongest force in the universe" and the second movie opened with the family getting slaughtered

Seeing Owen and Beru all crispy really messed me up as a tiny kid. It was the first time I made the connection that skeletons are inside of people.

Jon'C makes a good point. But I've got an idea how to get around that.

Even as a kid I thought it was weird that the imperials just let the bodies rot in the streets. I guess it was to show how evil the empire is, but seriously sanitation doesn't need to be part of binary morality!

I find the book perfectly suited for a young audience. The illustrations scattered throughout are vibrant and easy for developing eyes to lock on to. And while the themes in the overall narrative are complex, the writing style is such that you feel like you're playing a text-based fps with the quick time events being initiated by turning the page! While this would be tedious in other books, it fits the genera nicely here. Example:

"The decision was made for him when a commando appeared at the end of the hallway and opened fire. Kyle fired in return, saw the Imperial fall, and felt blaster fire fan the sided of his face. A second commando, this one backed by an officer, triggered a three-shot burst.
Kyle ducked, went to automatic, and saw the Imperials fall. Concerned that there could be more where those came from, the agent moved up the corridor, grabbed some loose power paks[sic], and followed the hall to the left."

And, finally, if you're child is constipated, showing them the picture on page 74 of Morgan Katarn is symbolically like blowing up the hoover dam. (pictured above.)
