Massassi Lives??!!

That, and it seems to want to be some kind of end-all middleware that touches everything. Maybe it's the systemd of IRC

There are too many incompatible IM bridging protocols, so here’s a new IM bridging protocol to bridge them

Anyway, like I said it’s probably technically fine. Brass tacks though, it’s probably not any different than Discord as far as any of us would be concerned (including Brian).

It'd be ironic if a thread called Massassi Lives ends up killing the forum by creating a chatroom that led to people no longer posting here (or posting less).

The other day I connected to chatcircuit and tried to join #massassi but it told me that channel is blocked and it banned me
2018-08-16, 6:36 PM #51
it moved off chatcircuit like 15 years ago lol
2018-08-16, 6:46 PM #52
the #politics channel in a Massassi Discord Server would be pretty rough, I think. The forum format slows things down a bit. I mean, just imagine RJ in such a chatroom ;)
2018-08-16, 6:47 PM #53
I guess I'm just saying it would be "rough" as a typically non-posting reader of the political threads.
2018-08-16, 7:07 PM #54
I'm not sure whether I should be excited, or terrified. Either way, think I better not try since my wrists couldn't handle it.

(Saying this as a typically non-reading poster of the political threads.)
2018-08-16, 7:09 PM #55
Also if you want to make it like an actual pub you should have a separate channel for each user who frequents the politics thread, where they shout angrily into space at no one in particular (but others are free to watch).

what about google +

2018-08-16, 7:26 PM #60
someone should hack google and steal the source code for Google Plus

And yeah, tbf I basically just described Facebook (or Google+ if anybody used it).

I've been waiting for SynIRC's demise for years.

Then ... I'd finally ... have ... peace.[/Palpatine]

I'll edit this post later today to include the whole litany on this subject that I've been copypasting on #massassi for some time now.

<Nikumubeki> I'll leave but a memory, and when you wonder "did... did he actually exist?", your kidneys start to bleed
<Nikumubeki> That will be my legacy
<Nikumubeki> Or, as gbk put it: <space_ghost> remembering you will make my kidneys recite SGC2C lines.

I'm really really not a fan of discord. I hate proprietary stuff and I hate huge electron clients and I hate "yet another service I have to sign up for" that's going to sell my information. (and if they don't now, they will in the future when their current monetization plans fail)

That said, obviously I don't really use the chat much and I certainly don't "own" it (I'm not the owner of the channel or even an op because my nickserv registration keeps expiring). If you guys want to try some discord thing you're welcome to; I can update the chat page to point to it if it works out. But I won't be seeing you there.

I'm also open to that matrix thing (despite the drawbacks), or a different IRC network, or setting up our own IRC server, or something else. I really like IRC but I'm not happy about the fact that all the servers spew certificate errors (is it impossible to install a working certificate with certbot on an irc server?) and I also don't like the java applet on our chat page which probably doesn't work anymore anyway. There's probably a js irc client somewhere that'd let people just load the page and get in.

My last post was on July 15, Steven.
TAKES HINTS JUST FINE, STILL DOESN'T CARE
2018-08-17, 10:24 AM #70
I looked into the Riot frontend to Matrix, and I'm really not liking their CSS choices. Too much wasted space. There is an option to fork the project and write a custom CSS theme, but I think I have a better idea.

I think Matrix could work pretty easily, in particular using WeeChat, which is a console program that runs natively on OS X and Linux, but perhaps the main sticking point IMO would be the user experience on Windows, since I'm not sure it's very nice to make people install Cygwin just to chat. It might actually be just fine, but to make things smooth for people there are two other options: either bridge to IRC (which sort of defeats the entire purpose of switching away from it), or take a poll among Windows users here and ask them if they can tolerate this (which seems to be the most mature (non-Electron) native Windows client available for Matrix).

Edit: on the plus side, there seem to be mature Android and iOS apps for Matrix, in case people care about that...

If the only user having problems with IRC is Jon`C maybe we should just get him a little jump box somewhere.
2018-08-17, 11:18 AM #72
Sounds like some of you guys want an IT project more than a chatroom ( ͡◉ ͜ʖ ͡◉)

only keeeding

Damn I hoping getting some shiny new tech would draw people in and make our chat room a lively hangout.

If you guys want to play JK, that could be a draw (I have it working on Linux including networking--you just need to copy a few extra DLLs). Or the draw could simply be finding a way for Jon`C to easily participate in the chat.

At any rate, while Matrix is definitely new it's certainly not shiny.

Social media has wrecked forums. It’s not just Massassi that’s emptied out, even big forums like Something Awful are almost dead. Everybody’s moved on to apps like Twitter and Facebook for short form comments and IM, and moved their long-form content to blog services.

Forums are in this ****ty no-mans land between IM and long form articles with an experience that doesn’t lend itself well to mobile phones, each siloed on subject specific sites and each requiring a unique login. It’s a repellant experience. And every time some forum user decides to spend their evenings on the couch with their phone instead of in front of a desktop computer, they’re guaranteed to eventually forget to check them at all.

I’m definitely not suggesting that something like that would bring anybody back, but you’ve at least touched upon the root cause.
