JK spooky boy, I don't know anything about any Werner in SW but that sounds pretty funny and great. Is he going to play Ponda Bobba's dad?

I'm getting so off-put by Disney that I don't even know if I can judge anything clearly anymore. I've been thinking that Avengers Endgame is a great place to divorce from the MCU as it pretty much wraps everything up pretty nicely. Although, I saw somewhere recently that Disney is going to have some absurd amount of content available in some package that bundles several streaming services for a nice price so I may be lured into it. Anyway, for some reason I've been optimistic about Star Wars lately but I'm still pretty indifferent to this new show.

Oh, I thought this thread was about which part of Star Wars resembles "getting shot by a random weirdo in a forest in the middle of an interview and brushing it off as a flesh wound" the most.

He did used to post on massassi, for a while quite often, IIRC. Uberslug, right? He's acting in the show, or something behind the scenes?

Hate to break it to y'all but they filmed some of the SW prequels in the United States of America and I'm in the background of a few shots a thousand or so miles over the horizon.

Huh, is that the guy who ran the chicken franchise in Breaking Bad?? Now he is distributing spice?

I wonder if we'll get to see Imperial remedial physical training in this new show.

So of the Disney era, is The Mandalorian probably the best, most "Star Wars-ish" thing that came out of it? I don't have a Disney+ sub but that's what I've been hearing.

Yes.

It's very "Star Wars-ish" in certain ways, and a bit of a departure, stylistically, in others. It leans heavily on a lot of Western tropes, which while occasionally present in Star Wars, weren't the Main Thing. The ways in which it does hew very close to "Star Wars-ish"-ness are... well, I don't know, they're fine if that's what you're looking for, but it's starting to feel like the jig is up on SW nostalgia porn, isn't it?

The Mandalorian is very competently executed, but it's one of the weirdest shows I've seen. The format is so odd. It's so quest-of-the-week-y, and when you step back after each episode, it's kind of amazing to reflect on how little actually happened, and how little (at least of substance) is said by any of the characters. It's an oddly empty show for being crammed so full of set pieces and slick images. There's a very light dusting of theme on top of the whole thing, but otherwise it's just go from A to B to C and overcome obstacles X, Y, and Z. I get where the people who say it feels like a video game are coming from...

Star Wars just doesn't seem like the place to look to find new or fascinating storytelling or worldbuilding anymore, and it probably hasn't been for quite a while.

I'm conflicted about the show. A couple of the episodes have been really good but most of them are completely blah. There is no story progression and they keep going back to places from the OT that make no sense. In the OT wasn't Tatooine supposed to be some backwater world that nobody goes to? It's apparently transformed to one of the most populated/famous areas of the galaxy. Oh and now Jawas are everywhere and have Sand Crawlers on every world? It's time to stop the callbacks to the OT because they just dilute the original story. Come up with something new and different. I don't mind seeing the same alien races or themes but come on.

I love seeing the out-of-work storm troopers and beat up speeder bikes and whatnot, but like saberopus said, it's completely empty.

Also is it just me or do the show creators hate animals? Like every episode they randomly kill things for no reason?

Nerd alert.

Tatooine isn’t really a backwater, per se. It’s more like a truck stop. There’s nothing of value there but it sits at the intersection of some major trade routes (particularly spice routes), so it’s a convenient place to stop and transfer cargo (particularly drugs), and if you’re a mercenary it’s a convenient place to find work (particularly from drug cartels).

Controlling Tatooine was important enough to the Hutts that one of them lived there openly before the empire moved in. Hutts being slug people from a swamp planet, Tatooine wouldn’t be a nice place to live for them.

I dunno, I actually like jawas being everywhere. Given their lifestyle it makes sense I think. They weren’t ever meant to be native to tatooine, so why wouldn’t there be jawas anywhere you had low populations and tech to steal/scavenge? There are cosmopolitan cultures on earth that aren’t terribly unlike this.

I like these unimportant adventures. Feels to me like a throwback to the Flash Gordon roots. And thematically they all seem to borrow heavily from Kurosawa, one of the other roots of Star Wars. The more I see of that the more I wish they would get Tarantino to direct an episode. Not because of the violence but because he's such a big movie nerd.

It's a real mixed bag of great episodes and not-so-great episodes--at its best it feels kind of like a big-budget Star Wars take on Firefly. At its worst it feels like a cheap live action version of one of the CGI Clone Wars cartoons, with sort of kids-show dialogue and editing. Rise of Skywalker is whatever, I think personally my favorite big Star Wars thing this year was actually Jedi Fallen Order.

I do love the small scope of Mandalorian, though--tired of every sci-fi thing needing to have apocalyptic stakes

I agree with your very last sentence. I disagree that this is anything like Firefly :( There is no character development, no relationships among characters (in the latest episode he went back to some old encounters to get some help but I don't think there was any meaningful interaction whatsoever). It really feels like TV for the 80s. Almost completely episodic like you don't need to have watched the previous episodes to understand or "enjoy" any episode.

I'm watching it, and I'm liking some moments, the character designs, the world/environment, but not really the "story" because after the first 2 episodes there's nothing happening.
2019-12-22, 10:46 AM #34
I feel like, at the point with this franchise, I look forward to not have much happening versus many things happening that just don't make sense.

Ive heard that complaint over and over again and it makes no sense to me. What we have here is a high-budget episodic science fiction adaptation of Lone Wolf and Cub that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s almost the platonic ideal of what Star Wars really is at its essence, and even if you can’t get behind that, it’s at least a refreshing change from all of the other crap out there.

What do you want? More Game of Thrones - in space, with lightsabers and Death Stars? Were you expecting every episode to be about baby yoda and the apocalyptic threat of the empire getting it? Why aren’t you bored of this kind of writing?

What Star Wars really needs is a teen drama based on the throwaway characters from those cut scenes where they showed Luke hanging out with his friends on Tatooine. They could call it Boy Meets Death Star.
2019-12-22, 1:59 PM #38
That's probably what Obi-Wan will have to deal with in his show.

FWIW my wife and I enjoyed the first four episodes. Actually we watched them all at once and was planning to do the same with the final four episodes.

I don't like to crap all over things and I guard against getting sucked into the negative hype that is out there. I genuinely enjoyed much of Discovery. I did allow negativity to poison me on the latest Terminator film but I have heard some people say it was an enjoyable action flick. I still think it's complete garbage with regards to how the treated the source material but I will watch it someday. Should I stay steadfast in my refusal to watch The Rise of Skywalker in the theater it is merely my protest against what they chose to do to the classic characters. The Mandalorian is fine.

You know, long ago I thought a cool idea for a TV show would have been The Adventures of Han Solo. Sort of a younger Solo, not as young as the Indiana Jones show. I do not recall exactly but maybe I was inspired by that Young Jones show and the old Solo novels. The other night I was thinking about how some good stories could be told about the building of the New Republic government and got me thinking about some sort of espionage tales similar to Jack Ryan that could have been told.

On the latter there, what sent me down that tangent was thinking about how the sequel trilogy was answering questions that nobody was asked and wondering what stories they could have told that would have been much better received.

One final note, it's funny now that they have pissed so many fans off they are blaming the failures of the "end of the Skywalker saga" on too much fan service. Right.

The entertainment press is just desperate to blame anything except the creators. They rated TLJ high because of Disney pressure, and handwaved away the audience reviews by accusing Star Wars fans of being too white and male. Now they’re being honest - critic and audience reviews are equally mediocre (at least everywhere except RT, for ~some reason~), but instead of blaming Disney and JJ Abrams for ****ing up and making another bad movie, it’s the fans’ fault for allowing themselves to be pandered to?

But hey, at least it’s only the entertainment press that’s too close to their subject and dependent on appeasing the privileged for access. Imagine if that happened to journalism on something important.
