New Year's Resolutions
2024-01-16, 4:23 PM #1
I don't really like the idea of New Year's Resolutions because that seems to imply to me that you have to start them in the new year and fail if you ever slip. Just the way I interpret that. However, there are some things I've set as goals for myself.

1) I want to read the bible this year and am using a 365 day Catholic Study Bible to do so. I'm a number of days behind already but I usually read more than one day's worth so I think I will catch up quickly.

2) Not miss church on any weekend as well as holy days of obligation.

3) Get a handle on investing. Fortunately we are debt free including the house but don't have any substantial investments.

4) Increase our charitable giving and tithing. We did considerably better with this last year but I'm sure we were closer to 5% rather than 10%.

5) Be healthier.

If any of you have set goals for yourself for this year I wish you the best of luck and success in meeting them!

I vow to learn original pronunciation English so I can sputter in antiquated puritan rage about all things Roman Catholic.

Also, I'd like to spam my way to the highest post count on Massassi.

Guys, we did it.

Let’s not waste this accomplishment. My New Year’s resolution is to be more respectful, and not to post stuff that’s in bad taste.

And for posterity’s sake, it’s not like what I posted was offensive by the general standards of the internet, but political content doesn’t belong here anymore, so…

The same Gaza with all those big pyramids? Cause that place is a pit, and I have some thoughts about the policy priorities of the Egyptian government.

Lately I feel intimidated trying to nail down goals that are supposed to happen within a certain time frame. I made a list of promises to my wife last Christmas, home improvements and whatnot, and looking back at the list I'd only managed to do about half of the things. The incomplete ones were hindered by bad weather, finances, finding a reliable contractor, but it still sucked to make a promise I couldn't guarantee. This year I'm trying to focus on areas I have more control over.

I started a business late last year and though I'm taking it slow I feel anxious about all of the steps to really get it rolling, but I have some goals centered on improving my production, getting a website up, and booking some promising conventions throughout the year to sell at.

I recently started sponsoring a few people who are struggling with addictions, it has been rewarding but has made me aware of areas in my own recovery I'm lacking and need to put in extra time. So I've been setting some goals to make more progress this year, and also keep up with my commitments for daily check-ins and reaching out to people in my groups I attend who need support.

I have a solid goal to teach my daughter to read before she turns 6 this year. She is doing really well so far as she can sound out words, but she doesn't read them passively yet. I think I'll be satisfied with her progress when she is picking up books and reading them by herself.

I'm also learning Spanish with my kids, though I suppose at this point I'm only concerned with staying ahead of their progress. I don't expect to ever be fluent.

Control really is the key. I find that it is often better to pledge to make progress towards certain goals. Last term I finally took the leap to make progress towards completing an associate degree. Not only does my job enable me to take at least two classes per term nearly free but bonuses and pay raises for each degree completed. This is my second term and I can tell it is going to be much more difficult than the last one.

Awesome! I've been thinking about a side business as well. Nothing fancy, I have a trailer I need to refurbish into a flatbed and then pick up some lawn mowing equipment and get after it. I would like to get some small earthmoving equipment someday so maybe pivot into that.

That's great! Thank you for doing that. I'm sure there are a lot of different emotions when you are helping/trying to help people in that way.

I remember reading with my son in bed most nights when he was small. Around nine or ten years ago, he's 18 now, we were reading The Hobbit. He was quick to point out how different it was from the movie.

I really wish I took Spanish in high school. I took French because it seemed more likely to me that I would use it, living in the Northwest and Northeast. Just a few years later, however, I would be stationed in Panama and was working on Spanish. I got decent with it but never stuck to it. I would like to get back into it though. Whenever I visit Panama I regret my lack of skill with the language and even routine business in the US is easier if you have some proficiency with the language.

You've got this. How many more semesters do you have left going at that rate?

Sounds fun. Would you be doing the landscaping yourself or hire underlings? My current plan is designing and producing home décor.

It has been really rewarding. for a long time I didn't think recovery was possible because I hadn't met anyone who had overcome the same problems I was dealing with. Taking some measures to be the change I want to see in the world has helped me with my outlook on life.

Funny you should mention The Hobbit. We finished the audio book last month and my oldest was really engaged with the whole story. Her language comprehension is pretty phenomenal and when I've been teaching her to sound out words she is far more engaged when I write out words from The Hobbit. "Wizard" "Dragon" "Smaug" etc.

Utah has a significant Spanish speaking population, but more than that I want to be able to communicate with my neighbors better. Studies have shown that small children can adopt a second language easier than an adult, and I figure if I get them started now it will get their feet in the door and hopefully be somethin they excel at, and maybe lead to learning other languages.

Don't really have any new years resolutions.

The main ones I would list would be to make the family happy, perhpas learn a language (never going to happen due to time and laziness), would love to make a jk level (refer to above).

For myself the main thing is to be happy, healthy, and the same for my family. Any additional will be an added bonus.
