I need help naming a character...
2004-01-06, 5:19 PM #1
I'm at a loss for what to name my main character. I'm writing a book, and have everyone else named but him. I've been using "Garreth Waller" as a filler, but I hates it, and Waller is a crappy last name.

So, I need a good last name for that character. I'd like it to suggest that he's just a commoner with a simple life. Nothing extravagent. If you think Garreth Waller is fine, say so.

If not, please, suggest a new name. You can change first, but the last is what I'm concerned with.

(If I ever get published, and I use YOUR suggestion for anything, I'll credit it to you [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif])

What's the character like? It would help to know setting, character background, that sort of thing. Names are important things.

And I feel your pain with the names. Fortunately, for my book, I now have a fantasy language system all set up so I can just generate new names when I need them. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

And um, if you're a writer, the ISB is interested in you. We're always looking for fresh bloo-- I mean, new talent. NeS is the place to be. Or NeS2, if you don't want to read 50 pages of story to get up to speed. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] But I should leave the advertising to Geb...

Well we can use Hinch's all purpose name generation program. Perfect for stories, RPGs, and fictional police reports.

Flip through a dictionary with your eyes closed, and point to two word. Then combine the two:

Homophone
Protectorate

...this one will be tough. Like the time I was making a name and the 2 words I got were "Dish" and "Rape".

Hrm, I guess Homtectorate. Sorry, that's not good. But feel free to use the system yourself. It's like the lottery, you win some you lose some.

Seeing as how I know this guy personally, I think it would be important to note that the character he is describing is a hero in a fantasy.

I'm gonna play with that name generator, but I don't think the names will fit the character.

He's a hero, yes - but at the same time, he isn't. He's just a guy trying to help at first, but then is forced to make a choice that would mean loss for himself or loss for someone else. Because of his character, he chooses to help the other, and that decision launces him into a series of events and choices that lead to him becoming a hero in the end.

He's very young at the beginning, mid or early 30's by the end. Works in a tavern at first serving drinks. It's important that he come across as just a normal guy, though. His name cannot sound regal or noble in any way.

Anything else?
