Massassi Game Lobby
2004-01-06, 5:56 PM #1
If anyone would be interested I was thinking of coding up a multiplayer lobby for Massassi. Here's what I've come up with so far:

  • Registration system
  • Should keep track of mods and auto load or auto download the needed mod
  • Perhaps be open source

I code in VB6, so if anyone else would like to help then bring it on [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]. Maybe if I figure out how to set up CVS we could do it that way and make it a community project. Any suggestions, comments, insults, spelling corrections, and verbal beatings are not only apprecated but are encouraged.

Yes I know of #massgames.. just thought this might make it easier. Especially for those who don't know as much about JK.

[edit]Yes a php frontend would be nice... but you couldn't do things like auto dectecting mods, and I'm not even sure you could launch the game from php. I may whip up a test version tonight and see how it works.[/edit]

VB sucks noodles. Youd be better off doing it in Perl or PHP, and access it via browser.

#massgames really isn't that hard. Use it in conjuntion with www.whatismyip.com and you shouldn't have any difficulty.

I suppose we could make something like that but trying to get Massassi to actually use it might be a diffrent sotry.

Well I don't want to put any time into a project that no ones going to use. I thought it would be much easier to either select or host a game, and then launch it, rather then fire up an IRC client, set up which mod to use, find the host's ip, and manually input it.

Basicly this would be a mod loader and multiplayer lobby, features that some newer games have built in. Let me just put it this way, if it was made, would you use it?

If the program was decent I think anyone would give it a try. Whether they stick with it or not is going to depend on the quality. Personally, I'm a big fan of Qtracker because I don't have to chat with people to get a game (it seems that I'm the only person left with enough sense to use the program for JK/MotS these days though). If there was the ability to join games without having to beg people for days to play with you to no avail (#massgames), then I'd be all for it. Less talk, more play, I say. I'd throw out some screenshots and more ideas if you really want people to know whether or not they'll use the program.

The problem isnt how easy it is to use, as massgames is easy enough to use already. Also, we already have (or did at least) scripts in place that are capable of giving out game info and such, but people stopped using them.

We do play games in massgames, on a pretty regular basis. If you go in and no one is around or no one wants to play, doesnt mean thats what its like all the time.

I am, however, thinking about reorganizing how things are run in the room, to try and breed some more life into massgames. Specifically, I would like to make it like the Massassi Players Group that existed years ago. I am open to suggestions and such.

I might also be interested in such a project as you're talking about, NoESC, but I think it would work better as a plugin for mIRC. Using an IRC room as the lobby would be best, because many people have IRC running in the background anyways, and some people might be adverse to the idea of yet another program to download, install and keep running.

There is no denying that a good web interface with a really nice IRC applet wouldn't be a lot better.

Who cares if it gets programmed in VB or C++? Come on, even if I don't like VB, I know it's easy to use and very effective for creating programs like this.

Can you make the chat lobby interface with the IRC channel? That way, games can not only be announced automatically, but also posted to whatever bot or whatever in there keeps game info and it will bring two groups together (those that like IRC and those that would rather use a more straightforward program).
2004-01-07, 11:52 AM #21
There is an IRC client made with PHP, but I looked through it and found it beyond my comprehension.
2004-01-07, 11:56 AM #22
Wouldn't a program like this need a server to store the game info on?

I'd prefer a proper program to a web based system. but VB? I dunno...

Brian: Yeah thats what I was thinking as well. I haven't tried connecting to IRC through VB but I'm sure it wouldn't be to hard. Thats probably the first thing I'll work on.

Everyone else: There's nothing wrong with VB, there wouldn't be much difference in performence if I wrote this in anything else. Plus writing it in VB means I will get it done much faster. The overall quality of apps you see on the web created in VB may not be as good as those created in C, but thats because it is easier for someone new to pick up VB and code up something. I personally have been coding in VB for almost 3 years now, coding small applications for local buisnesses. It gets the job done, and gets it done quick. I don't mean to start a debate on this, it's just what I have chosen. I have been rather busy but I hope to have some screenshots soon. If anyone has any ideas about the UI let me know. As for the server... I haven't decided what to do with this, It wouldn't have to be much though as its not actually hosting any games or the chat, just processing logins, any ideas here would be helpful.

Thanks for all the info... time for me to get to work.

DS, have you thought about hosting a "dedicated" JK server off RIT's big pipe? If you have a machine for it of course.

I like that idea. Maybe we can get a little applet type thing for #massgames.

And for the dedicated server thing, doesnt JK have a time limit? And it would be kinda hard to change the maps and mods.

It wouldn't be a server to actually serve the game, just to serve up avalible games, process logins, possibly maintain a list of mods and where to get them.. that sort of thing. As for a dedicated server as we have for JO and JA, well that would take some serious reverse engineering of JK to understand its netcode enough to write something like that. Even then it's something beyond my scope to write, that's something more fitted for a language like C.

As for the server, if anyones got a fast enough connection to host it then getting a machine to them to run it on wouldn't be a problem, that is if they don't have one to run it. I've got 1500/256 DSL here and while that may even be enough, I've got a dynamic IP.. even with no-ip.com its still not the most stable setup. I've got a spare 450mhz that should more than do the job though.

If there is anyone else who would like to work on this project just let me know here or drop me a line at ryan@sporkaudio.com

We can probably use Massassi's level database to provide an index of JKLs or something that are in each zip file (and their sizes), which will help identify which file to download for each map.
