Ok, today I went into the office at my school to get my OSAP money. For those of you from America and whatnot, OSAP is a government loan to all students to help pay for their school. I am in desperate need of this money.

I have a learning disability, ADD, Tourette's syndrome, and OCD. I have official documentation of this, and submitted it to the office.

Today I went to pick up my OSAP, and because I have failed my course I cannot get it. The lady in charge that I was talking to told me that my letter from a DOCTOR was not valid befause it was written in 1994 and I probably didn't even have the disability anymore.

What the hell does this stupid moron know? She told me that it didn't say that my disability affected my marks in school and therefore is not valid.

I am fuming. I just walked right out of the room and didn't even say thanks.

I want to bomb my school.

True. But the point is what she said. She has no right to point out what my disabilities are, and she isn't a doctor. She was very rude as well as she said it. That's what upset me most. She isn't a doctor, she doesnt know crap.

because school secretaries are horrid people who get off on making people miserable.

If I got paid minimum wage and had to deal with kids complaining about schedules, I'd sure as hell have some fun with it.

Aside from that, she really had no right to tell you off like that. As you said, she isn't a doctor.

She doesnt get paid minimum wage. I pay her salary. All the students at the college pay the teachers/staffs salaries. She makes good money, trust me.

You might not believe this, but I knew one school secretary in my lifetime who wasn't a total b***.

Firmly but politely point that out to her Tempermental.
Man that stuff gets me going too. I don't let jackasses like that talk to me like that anymore.

Go back in there. Be polite. But don't let her tell you about your disabilities.

Get a new letter from a doctor, asking him to specifically mention whether or not your disabilites would adversly affect your grades, then go back and try again.

Give the poor women a break; I'm sure there have been many others who have tried and used old disabilities, which may have since resided, as an excuse for poor work and low grades. If you genuinely are affected by these problems, then you should be more angry at the people who attempt to abuse the system than the people who run it.

Complain to her boss, or the school principal or someone with some authority, power, or influence in the school. If you're really mad about it, you can find a newspaper reporter to do a column about it... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Seriously though, talk to someone who can stand by you. Take someone with you and go back to talk to the secretary.

Or do what GoY said... but yeah. make sure the letter specifically states that you meet the requirements for that funding.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. School office workers are the the most rude and stupid people on the planet. And that is in all seriousness. They are so incredibly rude and arrogant, and truly don't give a damn, that it makes me crazy!

There is a deeper issue here. Most people want Power. They don't care how much power they have, as long as they have it. It could be power over small things such as kids at school, or over large things such as an entire country. People who want this power tend to have jobs like these: school secretaries, about 60% of instructors (in my experience), cops (near 100%), military careers (roughly 80% in my experience - the other 20% leave after their first enlistment), judges, other government workers (like post office workers, people at the DMV, permit offices, etc.), corporate managers (luckily I've only dealt with one *really* bad one), and about half of the "customer service representatives" I've dealt with. Even most parents are like this.

They show their power by treating people poorly and making other people's lives miserable for no reason. They enjoy it and do everything they can to prove their "power." They require people to jump through hoops to make them "happy" and only after this will they do their job.

There are two schools of thought, in my opinion, in regards to this. We all get screwed over at one point or another, some of us more than others. It's our reaction to getting screwed over that separates us.

1. "I got screwed over, therefore, I have a right to screw over everyone else in the same way." This manifests itself as people justifying their actions based on what happened to them (I was treated poorly by my school secretary, so therefore, I'll treat you poorly. My parents beat me, therefore, I can beat you. I had to wait in line a long time at the post office, therefore, I'll make you wait a long time.).

2. "I got screwed over, and it really sucked. Therefore, I will do my best not to do that to other people." These people tend to not want to "be like their parents" when they "grow up." They tend to treat people nicely and go out of their way to make sure they are acting civilly and with good intentions. Every time they see injustice, they fume and really understand what the others are going through. It's tough to be this type of person, simply because most people aren't. No matter how many times they get cut off in traffic, they *still* have to drive friendly simply because of the off chance that the person they just chose not to cut off wouldn't have cut them off had the situation been reversed. But we all know the person would have cut them off anyway, so it's almost pointless.

Which type are you?
2004-01-09, 10:21 AM #23
I don't really know.

I suppose I could say I'm sort of both - I avoid being screwed over but I try to stick it to people who deserve it.

If I don't know if they deserve it, I guess I consider them innocent.

You sound like a psychologist Brian. But your are very right [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Too many school officials are power hungry in my opinion.

I know this one teacher that will just randomly punish kids because of his dislike for them.

It's never pointless. Hopefully revelations are possible and the first sort of person could, through witnessing kindness or having this explained, become the second sort of person. People can change.

Of course the drawback of humanity's inconstant nature is that the second person could also eventually become disillusioned with the reactions of others and out of despair become that which they hate.

So.. it's more complicated than that. I've become tired of trying to nail down theories and ideas, especially in relation to eachother. At this point all I believe in is good intentions, though they may be hopelessly lost in incompetence and ignorance.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.

There's only one problem, and that is that anyone with any sort of knowledge about these disabilities is that ADD and Tourette's don't go away. They very very rarely completely go away, and practically always either get a little bit better as age progresses, or they get worse. Or they stay the same. They don't even know what causes them, how can they know that they can simply go away after "X" number of years..

A new thing though is that I was so upset by what she said (not hurt, but angry and distressed since my financial situation is very very bad), that my blood pressure skyrocketed to the ceiling. I started getting sick after that, with the normal dizzyness and spots, etc. Then I spent half the day vomiting. My nerves were so wacked out from this (as I stated, my financial situation is very bad).

I know what you mean, I have ADHD, and the funny thing is, people with ADD and ADHD are usually more intelligent than most other people you meet, so id say to hell with the secretary, dont pay attention to her. walk strait on in to the president or whatever.

*please note there are two ideas here, one being about ADD and ADHD, the other you can figure out yourself (theres ADHD for ya)

Sue her. It's plain and simple. She b****** at you, which makes you sick. Sue her.... or impale her with a blunt spoon, the latter being the more enjoyable
