Wow...the ignorance in this country.

So I am sitting at work right? My boss is walking out telling everyone to have a safe weekend and to be careful and she will see everyone on Monday. Well one of my co-workers goes: "Wait we won't be here Monday", so everyone was like "Huh, why not". He goes on to say "But wait, I thought Monday was a Black Holiday. Ok now there are two stupid things in his two phrases. First..he couldn't even get Martin Luther King Jr. Day correct. Second...he called it a black holiday. I can deal with some ignorance..but I just dont...have tolerance for that. Mind you, and anyone who is from Louisiana would know, he is some stuck up, rich, redneck wanna be white kid from Lafayette...

Its understandable for you not to be very knowledgable of the holiday from being overseas. In short, Martin Luther King Jr is probably one of the most important African American figures of our time. I am not good with dates, but he was prominent during the 1960 years.

I have the worst time remembering things like that. I can never remember President's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, MLK Jr. Day, and there are probably some I'm forgetting.

I think I do well enough as it is remembering my family's birthdays, Christmas, New Year's, and 4th of July.

Ubuu, you're the one who asked if Stalin was German. I mean.. yeah, your boss sounds like a dumbass, but ignorance is a little more common than you'd like to believe.
A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

Eh, isn't Martin Luther King Jr. day a black holiday? Like the guy said above, he was a very important "african american" figure.

Atleast he has a holiday, there is no Cesear Chavez day. And even if there was, i wouldn't get all pissy about somebody calling it a mexican holiday, cuz it would be a mexican holiday.

I don't expect people of other races to really care about somebody who fought for Mexican rights, but I d4mn sure expect the Mexicans to care.

Public schools get money from the government, and colleges get money from private organizations if they take the day off. I'm sure at least some, though, take the day off in actual remembrance of the guy.

He was black, yes. But his views changed all of america (and the world), not just black people.

Too bad we don't have that holiday in canada :/

Actually, many of the veterans we're supposedly remembering on Veteran's Day -should- be the black ones. The ones that got sent in to do the most dangerous missions back when it was okay to segregate like that.

about veterans day, that's a double edged sword. Many of the African American and Japanese American soldiers in world war 2 were eager to (and even as far back as the civil war in the case of the freed slaves) volunteered to do tougher missions because they wanted to earn the respect they deserved (and eventually became the best at it). There are also some noticeable occasions during the civil war when the north lost battles because commanders feared to put the black troops out front, even though they were the best (because of political calucations and not wanted to appear to be casual about their lives).

Veterans day is about all the veterans, but minorities have often fought harder and better because they felt they needed to for whatever reasons.

i guess they jsut didn't get the fact that you were saying that both holidays were non-segregated. sure, MLK Jr. was black, but we was for the civil rights movement, which encompased all of the segregated people, and while african americans are the largest part of that, there were a hell of alot more people then just them that were segregated. he fought for all of them.

Also, on veterans day, the reason that its called veteran's day and not armistace(sp?) day, as it used to, is because we celebrate all people who put thier lives on the line in order to protect our country. any person who wants to put a color to the people that should be celebrated most is being racist. you dont have to be a certain color to love and serve your contry.

Ok, I admit I don't keep track of Martin Luther King Jr. day. Then again, I don't know the precise date of Easter either.

Still, as I understand it, what pissed you off was that he implied it was "just a black holiday."

I don't think referring to him as "just a redneck white kid from Lafayette" elevates you above him much.

Wasn't it a sarcastic joke? Maybe in poor taste, but the wink didn't exactly make him seem all that serious.

Martin Luther King Jr. wasn't just a supporter of African Americans. He wanted all races to have equal rights. It's not as if he was against white people. He wanted white and black people to realize that we are on the same side. (Being humans, that is.)
