Is there a way to legally fix this?

Edi: Yes, I have reformatted many times... but why did they limit activations? I don't understand these things.

Alright, I activated it by phone... but I wonder if I'll have to keep calling in like that.

Why did they let you activate it by phone? What else did you give them what you wouldn't have online? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif]

Assurance that it wasn't a pirated copy which they didn't have online since the same key had been activated so many times. Welcome to the hell that software pirates have created.

Of course, by the same token Mystic could have gone the piratey way. So, like beer, they're the cause and solution to all of Windows' problems.

Let's put it this way... it's my CD key, but not my install disk. Blame that on Sony for not including a real WinXP disk with my comp. I wouldn't go as far as an illegal key-gen, however. (unless MS really pissed me off.)

Yeah. I've only ever recieved that screen when installing an OEM version of Windows XP. That includes about 30-40 installs of retail, 25 of which were on one computer.

It must have been a long day because I cracked up when I read that.

My parents have XP on their comp and I can't stand it. Nothing major, just a whole heap of little things I don't like. For one, I dont understand why the my documents folder isn't listed under the c: drive in windows expolorer. Shortcuts = good, but crikey not everyone is technologically illiterate.
2004-01-11, 7:30 PM #16
That's the common tasks list. It's shared between all folders. It gives quick access.

In all honesty, the Windows XP UI overhaul came about after years of research. They figured out everything that a mid to low end computer user could use. This includes studies to find the number of programs commonly used for the new start menu.

Once you get used to the new UI again, it's quite fast and easy to navigate. However, I'll admit this: Someone with my skill really just wants a command prompt for this stuff.

The "my documents" folder, at least on win2k, isn't in the root of the c drive, so to show it there would be silly. It resides under your individual user's profile directory.

Back to the subject at hand, that is *exactly* the reason I will not use Windows XP. All the crashing, instability, etc., I can deal with. What I can't deal with is having to "activate" by basically giving them a complete inventory of your hardware. There's no way, ever. It is absolutely insane.

Piracy? Gimme a break. They are the worlds #1 company. They, for many, many years, charged licenses for every computer PURCHASED at any store, whether or not it actually had windows loaded. They have been pirating us and stealing our money, not the other way around. Hell, this "anti-piracy" crap is exactly what makes me WANT to pirate. Because they have no business being able to disable my software like that.

Hmm.. would it be wrong to crack the activation on a version of windows you own?

Just wondering.

Well, mine doesn't have that, that I'm aware of. I've only installed once, however. Anyway, between me and my fiancee, we have XP home and office. I love student bought computer software [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I think you probably have those two switched around...

Anyway I have an OEM version of XP that came with my Dell, I haven't had any problems at all with having to activate it or any crap like that, and I have re-installed it at least a dozen times.
