Win98 "support" extended till 2006

Well, it's good, although the only "support" I ever got from microsoft was "reboot" or "reinstall" - they never had a good solution to any problem. The release of updated security patches is pretty okay, though.
2004-01-12, 7:37 AM #2
Wow. I thought they were discontinuing support very soon.
That's good I guess.

Good thing that they still "support" Win98... but I don't care. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif]

I think I'll go buy a new HD and dual boot windows/Linux on my main comp again.

I have an old Win 95 machine that I'm thinking of putting Win 98 SE on to modernize it with things like USB and easier networking. I'm finding that Win 98 full retail versions seem to bring a premium on Ebay. I do have a CD that came with the laptop I bought used on Ebay but I don't know if that's an install CD of sorts of an image so I don't know if will do what I need. Does anyone know of a reasonable source for legit Win98SE copies?

The garbage. Literally.

I was out looking for rental properties yesterday(family buisness, dont ask), when I noticed a computer in the trash at one of the houses.
It was a recent system.

So, I threw it in the trunk. A box, monitor, keyboard, etc. Almost a complete system. Out in the trash.

Last night I plugged it in. The monitor was DOA, but the box boots. Its missing a hard drive (no suprise there), but its got everthing else.

But the best part - get this - there is a Windows 98SE liscense sticker on the box. A legit liscense. Someone threw it out.
Im planning on putting a, umm, not-so-legit copy of Win2k on it, so I can finish OTS2, but the point is the same. Keep your eyes out for computers in the trash. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

That's pretty funny GBK! A friend of mine found a fully functional laptop in the garbage at Fort Campbell, KY. Lucky *******.

I can't say that I never use software illegally but I prefer not to. I just don't understand why Win98 full versions need to be selling for $170+ on eBay. Hopefully the CD I have with my laptop will do the trick. Doubt it though.

if it doesn't, like I said before, i could send you a copy that I'm not using. I am using Xp(crap) now and don't need my copy of 98, so i could send it to you.

You guys are talking about pirating software in my thread? That is against the rules. GBK is no longer a moderator of our forums. Everyone else, this is a last chance warning. WE DO NOT TOLERATE PIRACY, NO MATTER HOW EVIL THE COMPANY YOU ARE PIRATING FROM.

Plus, you can buy legit copies of win98 SE on pricewatch for 30 bucks.

My soon-to-becousin-in-law found an experimental version (I guess you could call it a beta version..?) of a G4 Mac OS-X laptop in the dumpster. (Don't ask why he was fishing) It's a bit buggy, but it's damn good for being free, and the trashmen were only a few streets down.

Umm... Bri it wasnt like GBK was offering to distribute it or anything, unlike certain people who posted in this thread. What he did was no worse than admitting to under age drinking or other drug abuse, IMHO some consistancy would not kill here. Or is discussing the use / distrubution etc of illegal drugs OK in here?

[edit]Or the countless people who brag about how many pirated mp3's they have, not like GBK stepped over the already shaky line.[/edit]

[edit2]If you like I can compile a list of all the current admins that have admitted to piracy of some form on massassi so you can releve them from their duties?[/edit2]

My brother found a fully functional PIII 933. It was riddled with virus' and wouldn't run properly. He formatted the HDD and now has a better comp than he used to.

Man if I could be so lucky then I could try and set up that server I wanted to.

I don't think anyone was talking about pirating copies. I'm looking for a full legit version and I think Arkon11 is offering to give me one that he no longer uses. Thanks for the pricewatch tip but I'm a little confused. Alot of people are selling just the license saying the customer must have their own copy. Is that a way of making a copy "legit"? I'm assuming that since Microsoft has (theoretically) been paid for the license and also assuming that the copy that license was to is no longer installed then this might be a way to make a "pirated" or "bootlegged" copy legal. So would I be in the right if I used a key purchased in this manner with a copy from another source?

Correction, they were expressing their sadness at GBK losing his moderator status, even though he deserved to be demoted for breaking the rules so blatantly. No need to get upset. :gbk:

Is GBK just now not a moderator because he said he was going to install a not-so-legit version of an OS? I guess for me, pirating implies taking steps to actually spread illegal copies. I'm not saying it's right to use one illegally. Of course that is wrong, too.

But that doesn't mean the two are equal. Semantics really. I guess my opinion would be that he (GBK) admitted he was going to use a pirated version but he was not engaging in any sort of offer to trade or pirate software on this forum. I was just wondering if his saying he was going to use an illegal copy of the OS in this thread is what caused him to be demoted. I just wasn't aware of whether or not he had already been demoted.

Eh-chem cough. Back on topic. Hopefully.

I think this is a good step. Yes, it's a crappy OS IMHO, but I know a lot of people that: A. can't upgrade because their computer can't run it, and they don't have enough money to buy a new computer, and B. Don't see the point in upgrading, if 98 suits them just fine.

I think it's a good step, by the time they stop supporting it after this, people will have been forced to upgrade, just to keep up with common programs and the internet/websites.
