Help with escaping AOL!!!

reformatted and reinstalled XP on her computer last night and all i can say is...wow. what a horrific PITA. it took 3 hours just to get her files backed up to my comp using a wireless connection. it took nearly an hour just to get it set up to do it. i couldnt do more than 1 thing at a time either or it would crash.
after her files were on my computer, i started the format and reinstall. first, it said it couldnt intall windows on the c: partition and that the disk may be damaged. WONDERFUL. restarted and it couldnt find the hard drive or cd-rom. EVEN BETTER. restarted a few more times and it finally found it. RELIEF. i deleted the partition and created a new one and that solved the problem. the only other thing left was to wait for windows to install. XP takes a lot longer than what i remember 98 taking. it took XP about 1.5 to 2 hours, is that normal? anyway, it finally finished at 1:30 in the morning (i started with this thing at 5:15pm mind you) and i could finally go to bed.

so ends (i hope) the adventure. just need to do windows update and reinstall her programs.

Find a local ISP so that she doesn't have some crappy included browser to use. Why does everybody look to these mega-giant corporate ISPs? I live in a town with a population less than 8000 people, and we have 2 local ISPs for dialup... *hangs head and shakes*

if she does change, im going to highly suggest a local ISP. the final decision comes down to her dad though, as she lives with him still right now. she would like to keep AOL if it was not the cause of her problems, as it seems is the case. so i need to find out if AOL has the capability to cause her computer problems like these, or WHAT COULD if it isnt AOL. i can't figure it out.

To escape AOL you should post a necromouse picture.
Sorry for the lousy German

I posted in the Koobie thread, thinking I'd have mastered the art of the necropost. Along came the Norwegian-German and showed me how it's done.

(I hope I recall correctly and you're the Norwegian-German, Impi. It could've been Matyy, though...)
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Your description of my heritage was indeed correct, my dear Krokodile.

You know, I'm very happy with my ISP but $19.99 per month for unlimited internet does still sound pretty good. Does anyone know if the number is still busy?

I'm wondering if Yecti's town still has two local dial-up ISPs.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

I started reading this thread in amazement that anyone still had 256mb of RAM and was using AOL... then I saw the date.
Nothing to see here, move along.
