WineX vs. Wine vs. WinXP

So, is WineX worth the $5 / month fee? Or should I just get Wine? Or maybe stick with WinXP? Even though WineX bothers me a bit as far as the GPL, I'm considering using all three. (with slackware)

If all you do is game, dont bother wine WineX/Linux. Youll just hit problems, get fed up, and quit.

If, however, you develop, and only play games once in a blue moon, then go for it. And get the CVS version of WineX, its free.

If it's just for gaming, dual boot.

Quick question. Could you run Macromedia's Flash and Fireworks using wine?

WineX... doesn't work too well. The retail version is good for installshield support. However, DirectX support is horrible, and the stability claims on the transgaming site are totally false.
Given that the bones of WineX is just Wine, it has remarkably solid support for basic Win32 API apps and literally anything that uses OpenGL (including JED).

But... seriously. If gaming is a major issue you should just stick with Windows, like GBK said.

I suppose I'll use Linux for native games and WinXP for the rest. Linux actually is getting alot better with support for games like UT2k3 and Neverwinter Nights.

Dave was referring to the Flash studio . you know. . the clumbsy, bulky app that is used to create flash files... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

WineX isn't really worth paying for, but it is getting much better in compatibility. The biggest problem is getting games to launch. Usually after they launch, they run quite well.

Older games run flawlessly on Linux, like Diablo II and Starcraft. (Starcraft has very slight graphical problems in Battle.net chat window, otherwise, it's fine.)

UT2003 has its own installer, but it can be a pain to get it to work right sometimes.

Unreal Tournament, however, is extremely easy. The easiest way is to actually copy it from a windows installation, and configure it to use OpenGL. You'll get massive performance, and it'll run flawlessly. (The game server list goes much faster, that's one thing I noticed.) UT will even run under regular Wine, as long as you got OpenGL on. Just don't be suprised if it won't go fullscreen. (Wine doesn't like fullscreen, at least with me. WineX is ok though) If you want to show off gaming in Linux, UT is absolutely the best way to go. (BTW: The other way is to obtain the free Linux installer for it. Haven't tried that though, but I would assume its like UT2003's)

Final Fantasy XI: I think I am one of the first to ever get this actually working. It's a complete and total pain in the ARSE to get it launched. PlayOnline will work, but you wont see ANY GRAPHICS. PERIOD. (I am working on it.) It will still work though, you just have to memorize all the clicks you have to make. Sound works, so it helps lead you through. You have to install this game in windows, then copy the game folder over into a similar directory in wine/winex's (WinC) path. Then you will also need to get the registry entries it used when it installed the game. It will not launch without them. Theres a list you can find on google with all the entries. Once INGAME, do not do ANYTHING for a good minute or so. The game will appear to be working, but it will instantly drop the connection if you click Agree. Once you wait a minute, it'll be ok, and you can click (This took a ton of troubleshooting). Log on as usual, and when the area loads, again do not do anything for a minute (The network status will display the status of what is going on. Dont do anything until you get 100%.) then go and play as normal. Beware, you need to wait a minute every time you switch areas though. Or else you will insta-drop. And whatever you do, do NOT close X, or do anything outside of playing the game, while it is running. It's got a good chance of crashing the game, and possibly corrupting your character. (Only had it crash once, by accidentally switching virtual consoles.)

I'm working on a compatibility list for Linux if you haven't noticed. I am trying every game I can. If someone wants to help, please let me know. I'll be keeping a running log on my site soon. ( http://www.sorrowind.net for those who don't know)

LOL GBK. That's right. Fireworks on the other hand is very usefull for spitting out javascript for dropdown menus.
I like it for that reason and that reason only.

Thanks for the info! Since I already own WinXP, I have no problem dual booting.
