Massassi Upgrades
2004-01-09, 3:43 PM #1
I think the php upgrade might have set things back a bit, as there are things that already exist (EC) that need to be fixed.

Im just wondering when some of these great upgrades are going to come along that were asked for in the Massassi Wish list thread. Not that im growing impatient or anything [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]. Did the new scripts slow Brian down? When are we gonna see some upgrades?

This may seem like it was intended for Brian only but i think we all should discuss it...

Actually, I have gotten a lot done. I have posted a couple of threads in here with screenshots, too. I'm a bit stalled on visible progress because after using PEAR::HTML_Quickform, I realized that the coding behind it sucked bad and so I'm writing my own version. It's actually really close to being done. I also took a few days off to finish up my JK Arena levels (and now I'm finishing up Detty's, too, and I'm going to try to contact Slug about it).

I was hoping to hear from Kedri regarding the newNEW design, but I haven't heard back [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] I'm working on an almost daily basis (an hour or so a day), so it won't be too much longer. Maybe two weeks or so.

Were you going to release another JKA level pack Bri? Because I have a level I wasnt able to finish up in time for the first pack that I'd like to contribute.

Call me a stick in the mud, but i'm rather happy with the old school feel of the massassi main page and boards.
Of course, code upgrades are always nice :-D

I too have a level which is 95% complete now, but was not ready in time for the competition... maybe a JKArena: SE? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I think Massassi is fine as is. A new scoring for levels is all I wish.

I hope those little pictures next to the name (avatars I think) and sig pics don't appear.

In a very roundabout, crappy, poorly-represented sort of way, yes. As Brian tells me, the actual Massassi2 is becoming more and more different by the day, and that the version you see there is really just a crappy version put up for testing purposes. Thus, the reason for it not being touched in who knows how long.

I really don't know if i'm gonna be able to live without the main Massassi logo. Brian, you are just gonna have to find a way to work it in.

DSettahr and GoY: yes, I'm planning on putting together another JKA pack. I will announce news once my levels are complete (simply because I don't want to be the hold up [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]. So far I have two of my own levels and two of detty's levels. So that's four. Plus your two == 6. Not too shabby. If only I could get Slug's, too [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Brian, I have an old level pack from Nathyn that he posted long ago when I first asked about what happened to JKArena. One of his levels, Shaft!, is particularly cool. I don't have anywhere to upload it, but if you search for the old "What happened to JK Arena" thread, the link should still be on there. The level rocks.

Just to continue the off-topic JKA discussion, it looks like I may have some spare time to devote to editing again, and could polish off the level I was creating for the original JKA effort.

Awesome, if I recall correctly, your level rocked.

I think the most important update to do is so that username and password can be entered like on the forum pages, and stored cookied so it's there until you clear, and then just have the reply box without a username/password field [a quick-reply field at the bottom of the threads can be rather nice as well but that's less important].

But i'd also like to see an option to turn off all graphical smilies in preferences or whatever. I already have Proximitron set up toreplace all the other forum icons and images with text, so i guess i could do it for them too, failing that.

Why not whole new forums? Everyone 17+ will get over it in a week.

Now that we have the PHP upgrade, new forums are possible. But frankly, they all suck! Every one of them takes something like 6-13 SQL queries to generate each page. That's simply insane! On times of peak traffic, it will really slow down the server.

I'm wondering if there's a place that posts vbulletin stats (how many queries it takes to generate a page). I have no problem buying a forum system if it's programmed halfway decently. [Not that this one is...]

Searching for such things i ran across this thread, which seems rather comprehensive thuogh may not be particularly relevant:
http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15553&perpage=25&pagenumber=2

Found this link on that thread:
http://www.mysql.com/information/benchmarks-old.html
And this on that page: http://www.mysql.com/information/crash-me.php
Though those last two naturally are going to be a bit biased. I have no idea if that's what you were looking for though..

Well, I dont mind them but if the master has something in mind than its got to be good. The only objection i have is the problem how sometimes when i post i cant see the post i just put on and it can be an issue sometimes.

they have far more activity than we do and i hardly ever feel lag on it... *shrug*

Most sites that run big forums have a dedicated database server just for their forums (and perhaps a dedicated web server as well - or they may be combined). Massassi has to run our main site and our forums off the same server. Right now, most of the stuff on our site isn't dynamic - we basically use PHP to generate static pages. We won't be able to do that for much longer, there are so many things that I'd like to add to the site. I don't want something as simple as forums to be taking up our CPU cycles when they are needed for something else. If Massassi was making money, this wouldn't be an issue (simply because we could buy another server).

The problem with most forum systems is that the database schemas designed by the programmers simply suck. They use the database as a glorified file system, not using real relations or joins to handle things correctly. Thus, they need so many damn queries to generate each page. Each query causes overhead in just the transport between PHP and MySQL, not even taking into consideration the processing the database has to do.

I'll email vbulletin and ask them some questions about how it performs. Many companies/open source products say how fast their forums are and whatnot, but they don't allow you to turn off the cpu-cyle-robbing features that aren't really important to a forum anyway (like listing people who are active, private messages, etc.).
2004-01-13, 10:52 AM #38
We could try programming our own forums, Bri. You and I are both pretty good PHP coders. Nothing fancy, you know, but with your fanatical attachment to keepitsimplestupid and my attachedment to butthisisneat, we should end up right where the sweet spot is [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Anyway, you guys needn't worry about new forums... if we ever change, I'll be sure to make us an oldskool theme where you can't even tell the difference [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
