I want to start playing Warhammer 40k. I was serfing the web and accidently found a picture of the Tyranid army, and I instantly fell in love. The game is amazing to me. Do you think it would be worth the money to invest in?

I always thought they were kinda like Space Barbies.. hehe.. Although I know a few people that play. I think they coat the figurines in nicotine (s?), because everyone instantly gets addicted.

Never played, but my take on it is that it's expensive and I've heard you have to paint your own armies for sanctioned tourneys. (Though I do have a few Warhammer minis I use for D&D gaming.)

I'm a big fan of MageKnight/Mechwarrior and Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures, though. Much cheaper and prepainted, though, of course, they're plastic rather than pewter.

Think hard about it before you start.

About 5 years ago, my friends and I got into the Warhammer (and 40k) scene. It started with a few minitures and some books, then it started into full blown out armies of Wood Elves and Brittonian Knights..... Dragons and Dancers and Knights, oh my!

From there we went to the 40k starter set and moved quickly into making a large Space Marine force (around here it wasn't hard to find huge games to play in).... however 4 years have gone by, I no longer own any of my Wood Elf miniatures (with the exception of the Dragon which is still my favourite piece) or related materials. I'm pretty sure our 40k stuff is all sitting in a box here in the basement. Most of my Wood Elf army was sold at about half price of what I had payed for it since they were already painted and put together and such.

I spent waaaaaay too much money on it, yet I never play anymore. Don't let it be a phase [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Look, if you want to throw away your money, take up coke. It'll be cheaper, too...

lol. Yeah. Some of my friends play Warhammer, and if you ask me its a waste of money. You pay $30 for a box of plastic worth about 23 cents. Then you have to glue them together and paint them with tiny bottles of really expensive paint.

I have better things to spend my money on.

I have a friend who plays Warhammer and 40K. I tried to get into it, but I'm poor. He plays it every week or so. He likes it a lot.

You should take pride in the fact that you build and paint your own army. You decide exactly what they look like. You can even get creative and put an orc arm on an elf (for example), and then say that he's a special unit (though I doubt tournament rules would allow his special abilities). The painting can be creative, too. I went to a tournament with my friend once. There was a guy with a giant (Dwarf army I think). The paint job on that giant made him look like he was from Braveheart. He even had the blue paint on his face. Building and painting your army personalizes it to really make it yours.

I think if you know a place not too far away, where you can play against a decent amount of people, and you have enough money, then do it.

I'll stick with Chess, the real game of war.

i thought of also getting into it, it looks fun, i wanted a undead army, and build some tanks and apocalyptice soldiers, one of my buddies a couple of towns over makes his own figures for it as a hobbie, like actually carves out of wood and metal and such, hes got castles a hude old pool tabel that he redun and put a new fabric over it with mountains and such, its a cool game, but i never even seen a match i just know a bit about it, but i love board games like that, i used to be a magic the gathering fiend, i got cards sitting somewhere, but i agree, make sure its not a phase and its gonna be a hobbie

It's a bigger money drain than Magic: The Gathering.
Seriously.

If you like long battles, customisation and the sense of working your socks off to make something look good, go ahead. I collect Orks, and I play with them occaisonally when I can. But like others have said, don't let it be a phase or you'll be disappointed.

Yeah, but you know what? This one, this one right here, this was my dream, my wish, and it didn't come true. So I'm takin' it back. I'm takin' 'em all back.

I played warhammer 40k a few years ago, the main problem I had was learning the rules, there are so many.

I never played but I used to collect them for painting them; that was the fun part for me, just being creative. I would say it's very expensive and you'll lose interest within a year or so and will regret it if you spend any more than about $100 on it.

Just get a couple of them and paint them up real nice, then ask if you can help your friend out in battles, and help him paint his ones, it's a much cheaper way to have a fairly equal level of fun.

i used to have a fairly huge space marine army... although i prefered it for the assembling/painting than the actual playing, given it all up now, it got a bit samey after a while, but i do quite like the setting of the 40k universe, and you might sometimes still spot me reading a book.

The game used to be good but they keep simplifing(sp) it. Also every so often the re-release it with "updated" rules. So you have to pay the money for the rules and codex again. The price's also keep going up.

They do however have some wicked models and it can be fun to play.

But lets put things into comparison:
Money I spent on 40K = £1000
Money my parents spent = £500
Number of times played = 20 - 30
Number of years since last played = 5
Number of models still unpainted = 50% (approx 100!)

The main reason I want to make a Tyranid army is because they look so damn cool! I want to play, but I want to spend time making them, because my mom is now limiting my time I can spend on my computer, and I need something else to do besides sleep. Thanks for the input guys! I will try not to spend that much, today I am going to buy the codec and some random dude. What type of supplies do i need to build them?

You'll need the polystyrene cement, or if you're using the metal figuringes you'll need the superglue. You'll also need paints (I used plain old acrylic paints which I got from an art shop much cheaper than the offical games workshop ones.) I do, however think you should get the actual brushes because it's hard to find one small enough elsewhere.

Yes, very much so. i've been collecting magic (unfortunatly noone around me plays, which really sucks, but whatever) for several years, and i probably spent maybe $150 total. One of my friends said i should try warhammer, and i asked hom much to start. he said around $200 (for a full army/rulebooks/all the rest you need to really start). I think i'll stick to AOE and Starcraft, thank you very much.

I used to play WH40K a lot, I even went to the games day in 2000. Then I realized I had better things to do on a Friday night than sit around in some basement rolling dice and playing with model kits.

Anyway, I've got like 3000+ pts of Dark Angels Space Marine stuff and probably 800 pts or so of Tyranids, plus Codices, if anyone's in the market. It's in my closet somewhere.
