Which do you prefere? I know neither is really 'better' than the other, but if you have a preference, why? I personally like gnome. It has a nice home/relaxed/wood look to it, while KDE looks all shiny and perfect. Of course, different themes change all of that.

Actually, one is in fact 'better'. Namely Gnome [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Or more accurately Enlightenment with Gnome installed as well.

KDE is the Anti-WM.

I just switched to KDE. They're both really the same to me. I just switched because I prefer the text editor Kate to anything else I could find for Linux.

Evad, try Bluefish. Or gvim if you really want power and are willing to learn something new and different [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Regarding the Gnome/KDE question, I honestly think both of them are bloated pieces of crap and I don't use either. I simply use IceWM - which is something of a Windows clone but faster, more stable, and with a TON more options (you know all those little things about Windows that bother you? They don't exist in IceWM, or if they do, they can be toggled on or off [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif].

Another really good/fast one is XFCE. I hope you know that you can use KDE programs in Gnome and Gnome programs in KDE, and of course, either in any window manager. You don't have to be running a specific desktop environment just to use the programs.

Try Scintilla. Thats what Ive been using as of late. My only problem with it is that its a GTK-based app, so its got those god-forsaken GTK filepickers (which I hate with a burning passion, that burns with the heat of *many* suns).

KDE's dialog boxes are one of the things I love about it. Some say they are a clone of Windows', but I disagree. They look like them, sure, but they have none of the problems that the filepickers in Windows have.

This is the part where someone says "you stupid ****er! Your not suppose to use the filepicker! Thats why it sucks! Drag and drop! Drag and drop!!!". To this person, I say, how the hell can I drag and drop from a GTK app to a QT based one, when they use incompatable D&D schemes, or they lack it all together?

I'm not really concerned about the programs right now, just the themes.

Why don't you make GBK+ runtimes then?

Acutally mostly just what i've seen of KDE looks incredibly ugly and big-friendly-interface to me. And it isn't really up to par when it comes to standards involving things such as Gaim new-message notification updates and such.

But most importantly, can you make KDE/Gnome look like this ? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Ugly? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I'm not partial to any desktop manager, but e17 is looking mighty fine.

Vi is the best text editor, hands down.

Hmmm... I've used Bluefish. I recognize it. It must have been on another distro I installed.
I'll have to dl it and install it.

I just put another 30GB HDD in my wifes comp. I'm gonna dual boot it with Slackware (it's one distro I have never installed).

Neither are perfect. I usually end up using KDE because it's closer to what I want, and all the other window managers are just too lightweight, even with extensions or plugins.

Quoted for agreement.

It almost seems like desktop Linux is against anything that could be construed as eye candy, but I like everything to have a somewhat clean and polished look. To me it seems that KDE and GNOME both can accomplish this pretty well. Many of the lightweight WMs that I've tried seem to lack a cleanliness to them. They're a little rough around the edges, which tends to bother me. I choose KDE over GNOME purely out of personal preference. I don't particularly like the look of GTK+ applications, though I use many all the time (Gaim and Firebird). If I could use my Plastik theme with those, I would be happy. KDE may be somewhat bloated, but I really don't mind. Portage and DONOTCOMPILE help me get away from that quite easily. I <3 the way Fluxbox is loaded immediately, but I'll trade a few seconds load time for a little extra bloat (read: features that I value in my DE).

You should check out XFCE or IceWM, both of which are very polished, fast, and have most (if not all) the features you're looking for (actually IceWM is a bit sparse).

I haven't tried IceWM, but XFCE is pretty nice. I just.... I dunno, somehow like the feel of KDE more.
