Mounting a motherboard

Do you have to put skrews in everyhole?

I just took apart my computer to troubleshoot a boot problem I'm having. As I stated earlier, It powers up (fans, LEDs, drives ect.) but dosn't beep (at all) or have any video output on the moniter.

I have been experimenting and have concluded that:
  • It is not the memory
  • It is not the video card
  • It is not the PCI devices
  • It is not the power supply
  • I have tried resetting the BIOS

I know that the problem is either
  • The motherboard is bad
  • Something is short circuting
  • The hard disk is broken, but this is unlikly as it was working the last time I used it
  • The CPU is fryed, but again it was working fine so I douht it.
  • Or there is a compatibility error in my hardware that I over saw.

Just in case, here is a list of my hardware.
  • Intel D865PERL mobo
  • Intel Pentium 4 1.5 GHz w/ 400 MHz FSB
  • PNY Geforce 4 Ti 4200 64mb
  • Two sticks of 256mb Crucial PC-2700 DDR SDRAM @ 333 MHz each
  • modem
  • the drives

The whole thing is in pieces right now, but I'd like to get some tips on re-mounting the mobo before I start. Does it matter what holes I use? Here is what it looks like: (The [Edit: +'s] are skrew holes)

The two skrew holes don't have mount points built into the case. I know this is silly, but if it dosn't work when I put this thing back together, I'll have to assume it's a bad mobo and RMA it.

Any help would be appriciated. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Edit: That text art came out horrible...

Edit: Fixed da mobo.

Edit: Fixed again.

As long as the mobo is secure, you're fine. Some of those holes are probably for other cases that have screw holes in different places.

if it doesn't work it could just be A) something wrong with your moniter B) your OS is screwed up (by the way, what OS are you using, it might be the problem?) Oh and for the record, it only beeps if what your running is making the processor run at near 100%, and that is not a good thing.

Would it help if I did a full format on the hard disk by setting it up as slave on my other comp? Because I was going to erase it anyway... I just didn't think it would matter.

Oh yeah and I'm sure the moniter is good. (I'm using it right now with my other comp)

This may sound kind of odd, but you might try removing and reinstalling the processor to make sure it is seated properly.

I have had a problem in the past where the processor was loose and the computer just hung as soon as you tried powering up.

Unless you typed it wrong, that is an Intel 865 chipset, in which case, it doesn't support the FSB of your processor.

Unless of course it was working at some time, then disregard this post. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I put the comp back together. Didn't work

Then I put the CPU of the non-working computer in my working comp. IT DIDN'T WORK. This tells me the CPU is fried.

Then, I put my GOOD CPU in my not working comp. Guess what? It didn't work. That tells me the motherboard is fried as well!

Then I put my good CPU in my good computer. It made a high pitched nose and was sinlent. Then I turned it on and it worked.

WTF! Now I have a fried CPU and a motherboard? If thats not what's wrong with it, it is beyond me. I should have never gone into computers and instead stuck with running freely naked in the fields and sniffing flowers.

It actually supports 800, 533, AND 400 MHz FSBs.

Hmm, according to intel's website, my mother board only supports processors as slow as 1.6 GHz. Mine is 1.5 GHz. Should this even matter?

Errm... I have a Intel 865PERL mobo like yourself and I'm running a 2.6Ghz P4 w/ 800Mhz FSB.

EDIT: Nevermind, I read your post wrong.

I really don't understand what you mean by that. The L2 cache is only 256kb rather than 512kb. Someone- is this ok?

What are the specs of your other (working) computer? Testing CPUs in different computers only works if both motherboards support the chip, obviously.
