Tol-Ki-En

why not read a book sometime, i wouldn't really consider it a spoiler when the story is over 50 years old.

I think I read somewhere that Tolkien pronounced it "Toll-keen".

I myself am too lazy to remember that, though, so I usually say 'Toll-kin'
2004-01-16, 8:44 AM #11
It's "Toll-keen."

As for why he says, "It burns us," it's because he's spent so long in the dark caves of the mountains and the dark of the night that he's not used to being in the sun - hence, it burns him.

When we're talking about Gollum saying "It burns us" isn't that referencing to when Frodo and Sam put the rope around Gollum's neck in The Two Towers?

"It burns! It burns us! It freezes! Take it off us!"

That's what we're talking about, right?

Oh, and it's Tol-keen [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

About gollom, he refers to the elen rope. they never referenced it in the movie, but the rope they are using is elven. very strong and all that. gollom, being evil, gets burned by the rope.

Yeah umm.., the elves made the rope, and Gollum hates anything pure, including food, and textures of objects, it really doesn't have anything to do with 'The Eye'.

Actually, it is referenced in the EE. It even unties itself after Sam and Frodo climb down it, like in the book.

The only other word I can think of that ends in 'ien' is 'alien', which you say 'ay-lee-enn', so it would make sense to pronounce Tolkien as 'toll-kee-enn' but I tend to say 'toll-keen' out of general laziness.

But "toll-keen" is the correct enunciation.

well, now that you know how to pronounce his name try pronouncing the name of his birthplace:
Blomfentein ;D
(note: must be spoken with a heavy Afrikaaner accent... for the americans here that is NOT a Britt accent =P)

Blomfentein is such a fun word (=
