God save us from an Earth in which all men are the same. God save us from a colony where that is the goal, or a culture that assumes that for its norm. Give me a thousand people speaking different tongues, worshiping different gods, and dreaming different dreams, and I will make of them a greater nation than you can make with ten thousand of your gengineered duplicates. For mine will have the spark of greatness in them, while yours live for conformity, worship mediocrity, and take their carefully modulated delight in predigested dreams.

A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

If you want something rebellious/anarchical, Fight Club has toooons of great quotes.

"Our fathers were the models for God; if our fathers bailed, what does that say about God? You must accept God may not like you, he may not love you, you are alone."
-er...one of 'em. Too confusing to work out.

However if you want something more meaningful, I like voltaire.

"As long as people believe in absurdities they will continue to commit atrocities"

The universe is one great kindergarten for man. Everything that exists has brought with it its own peculiar lesson. The mountain teaches stability and grandeur; the ocean immensity and change. Forests, lakes, and rivers, clouds and winds, stars and flowers, stupendous glaciers and crystal snowflakes--every form of animate or inanimate existence, leaves its impress upon the soul of man.

You need to write an essay on a quote? That's it?

I mean, where to begin?
There's The Biblical: [Bible stuff. Duh]

The Classical: "Veni, Vidi, Vici", "Cogito ergo sum"

The Rennaissance: "And a prince ought, above all things, always to endeavour in every action to gain for himself the reputation of being a great and remarkable man", "To be, or not to be..."

The Great War: "The old lie: Dulce et decorum est, pro patria mori"

The Second World War: "Colonel Carthcart was so upset by the deaths of Kid Sampson and McWatt that he raised the missions to sixty-five."

The Drug Induced: "I remember saying something like “I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive...” And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: “Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?”

I mean seriously, a quote could be about literally any topic ever...hell, it doesn't have to be profound if the topic it's about is interesting and could support an essay (though then the essay would be about the topic, rather than the quote). It's a rather odd assignment.

Here's a long one:
"I once wrote a story about a man who was injured and taken to a hospital. When they began surgery on him, they discovered that he was an android, not a human, but that he did not know it. They had to break the news to him. Almost at once, Mr. Garson Poole discovered that his reality consisted of punched tape passing from reel to reel in his chest. Fascinated, he began to fill in some of the punched holes and add new ones. Immediately his world changed. A flock of ducks flew through the room when he punched one new hole in the tape. Finally he cut the tape entirely, whereupon the world disappeared.
If I control my reality tape, I control reality. At least so far as I am concerned.
Really, reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away." -Philip K. Dick (Best author EVER (next to Asimov))

Or if you want to sum that one up...
"Reality is just a point of view." - Philip K. Dick

"Question yourself. Question your questions. Question your lack of a question." -Don't remember. I think it was a Zen saying.

"They say music can talk to you, and alter moods, but can it load a gun for you? And cock it too?" -Eminem (if you want to go into a speech about music and what not)

"Sometimes it is not necessary to reinvent the wheel, but the circle." -Me (Zac Cohn)

If you want something interesting to write about..

"Here is America struck by God Almighty ... so that its greatest buildings are destroyed ... I swear to God that America will not live in peace before peace reigns in Palestine, and before the army of the infidels depart the land of Mohammed."
--- Osama bin Laden, in a statement on October 7, 2001

“To kill Americans and their allies, both civil and military, is an individual duty of every Muslim who is able, in any country, until their armies, shattered and broken-winged, depart from all the lands of Islam.”
--- A manifesto published by various Islamic leaders

"Open your chest welcoming death in the path of God and utter your prayer seconds before you go to your target."

"But I say if the American government is serious about avoiding the explosions inside the U.S., then let it stop provoking the feelings of 1,250 million Muslims. Those hundreds of thousands who have been killed or displaced in Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, do have brothers and relatives. They would make of Ramzi Yousef a symbol and a teacher. The U.S. will drive them to transfer the battle into the United States. Everything is made possible to protect the blood of the American citizen while the bloodshed of Muslims is allowed in every place. With this kind of behavior, the U.S. government is hurting itself, hurting Muslims and hurting the American people."

-- Both from the Al-Quaeda training manual, i think.

If anyone knows what short story Philip K. Dick was talking about in that quote, please tell me. I've been engaged in a search for it for some time now.
