Is that column an editorial? It had better be. The entire article had an obvious slant and half-way down the author stopped reported and instead began giving his own opinion.

I'm kind of torn on this issue. The bishops should have absolutely no authority over the politicians, however it is their right to excommunicate them.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature, and has no chance of being free unless made or kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stuart Mill

I don't think that the church should be allowed to do anything beyond ex-communication and below.

Our governor once pardoned a man on death row because the Pope asked him to. That's too much of an involvement of church in state.

Good luck to them. They'd lose a lot of members and a lot of money.

It's the style of the journalists at this magazine to report the subject, the finish the cover stories with an editorial.

True, but those members would not be true Catholics anyway. I have to agree with the article when it says, "...At least the church would have its integrity."

Thanks for the reply help, Wolfy! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I think it's a good idea. I'm tired of politicians simply using religious faith as a vote getting tool, when they don't really believe the basic tenets of their faith. I think that if they don't adhere to their faith tenets, then they have no buisness putting "Catholic" down on their political resume.

Just as you shouldn't be able to claim to be part of the National Honors Society if you have a straight F average.

I just love it when some psuedo-Catholic politician says that they are Catholic, but support abortion, executing 14 year olds, etc.

I think it's a great idea to excommunicate them.

I have no problem with politicians being retards, just so long as they don't associate themselves with a group they have no right to count themselves among. When you violate a religion's most basic principles, it's time to stop claiming to be a member.

As far as the major point at hand, I agree with Janitor Bob, Bounty Hunter 4 Hire, etc. in regards to both politicians and the Catholic Church.

Which guys exactly?

The church, being an independent institution, has the right to do whatever it wants to. There is no invalidity to this at all.

I abhor all incarnations of religion. By religion I mean the man-made qualifications of being able to identify with a given sect, denomination or church, which I generally refer to as a cult in my normal speech when talking about the issue.

I believe in Jesus, that he was the son of God, and that he rose from the dead and by grace I am saved. I'll explain it later if you want.

You mean organized religion. There's nothing wrong with organized religion, it's purpose is to keep the followers "on the path" or so to speak (the path that they have already chosen). The problem is when people lose sight of that.

No, there's definitely plenty wrong with organized religion. Especially when "the path" is contrary to the core beliefs of the people.

Then it's not good. I was trying to indicate that. I dunno bout you, but my church believes in exactly what I believe.

I recall hearing that they can execute 14 year olds in Virginia or something.
Oddly enough Canon Law allows for executions, but only in the most extreme circumstances, and for the most heinous crimes. This being because the belief is that all authority comes from God, that the duty of a legitimate authority is to preserve society, etc.

Obviously not so when your executing people left and right, and lower the executable age to minors.

People like the Pope feel this permission is no longer valid today, considering the changes in prison systems, and in light of the advancements in society since the permssion was put down.
