Some Jewish leaders have said it portrays a very anti-semitic message. They are, however, countered by other Jewish leaders who say that it's simply a movie about Jesus, and nothing more.

I heard the same thing, Wolfy. From what I heard, it portrays the Jews as very hostile, etc, and these Jewish leaders who are upset think that's anti-semitic. It is, of course, bullcrap [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] It simply shows how the Jews were during that time.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure why they have a problem with it. I mean, the Bible is chock-full of "they reject God, crap happens, they turn to God, God forgives, they reject again..." And what everyone else said.

And I think Mel Brooks should make Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money first [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

This depiction, at least what I saw in the trailer, seems kind of like an outdoor drama that is done near me and I reguarly participate in... Although I do think they will have a bigger budget than the local play
The play I participate in is called the Living Word and it is termed a 'Passion" play. I think I'll go see it.

the trailor alone moved me, prolly the music. im gonna watch it as story-value, and rank the movie on that basis rather than a religious basis. coz frankly im sure even if i wasnt jewish and felt it was anti sematic, i could be some other religion and have some other beef with it. ppl just need to look at it as a movie. with awesome music

I thought it wasn't going to have subtitles.

From the trailer, we hear one line from Pilate- was it in Latin or Greek? I couldn't tell. He would have spoke Greek.

Jesus is lucky to get a Mary Magdalene like Monica Bellucci.

From what I recall it was "ecce homo", or "behold the man" (though I'm fairly sure the "homo" should have been in some other case than nominative). Of course, the pronunciation was absolutely atrocious. Latin is not pronounced the same as Italian!

How is it old news, just out of curiosity? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] The movie isnt even out yet.

It doesnt really interest me enough to see it in the theaters (I have to be rather picky with my in-theater movie choices these days as I'm rather poor, so that isn't so say that I think it will be horrible) but I do plan on seeing it eventually.

stat: yeah, he *should* speak Greek... but iirc Gibson is Catholic and so he wanted it in Latin [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] (j/k)

i'm not entirely sure but it sounds like what Jesus says is Aramaic/Hebrew... i'll have to show the trailer to my uncle or my dad (both have Masters degrees in Bible and studied Greek and Hebrew)

it seems like a very good movie... i'll probably go see it in the theatre.

the music seems very good just from the trailer, i hope it's all as good as that (=

I'm all for this movie. Instead of killing thousands of people, taking their gold, and later forcing them to be christians (at least publicly), we can just make movies instead. Think of how many lives Mel Gibson and the movie camera could have saved if they would have been around a few centuries ago.

Talking about Gibson's Catholicism, he belongs to this bizarre subsect that still practices the pre-Vatican II Latin Mass, and a lot of the other practices that were cut out of the Church in the '60s. Blaming Jews for the death of Jesus would be one of them.

Simply the controversy and the reports of those at the screening make me think that the movie will be both historically and Biblically accurate. We shall see...

i'd say the majority of Jews were for Jesus or just didn't know what to think.
really it's just the Sanhedrin and Pharisees who were against Jesus and caused his death.

but then we could also blame Judas for his death... or Pilate... or the Romans in general.
it doesn't really matter; what matters is it happened (=

EDIT: btw Yen, your sig rocks! ;D that's one of my favourite movies

My father saw this movie at a special preview a few days ago, and he said it was very well done. It was very, very gruesome, and some people had to leave (due to the gore, or because of thier grief for what Christ went through, he couldn't determine, but it may have been both). The entire movie is in Greek and Aramaic (both of which my father understands), and is shown with English subtitles.

I for one plan to see movie, due in part to the good report I got from my father and others who saw it.

From website:

Languages
All the characters in the film are heard speaking the languages they would actually have spoken at the time. This means Aramaic for the Jewish characters, including Christ and his disciples, and "street Latin" for the Romans. Greek, which was commonly spoken among the intellectuals of the period, was not quite as relevant to the story.
= = = = = = = = = = =

I heard they were thinking of doing the movie without subtitles. Might just be a rumor, though.
